NDIS Support Coordination in Avalon

Support coordination is funded by the NDIS under the Capacity Building budget. It costs you nothing out of pocket. The NDIS sets maximum hourly rates that providers cannot exceed.

Level 2 Support Coordination costs up to $129.59 per hour under the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements. This is the most common level, used by around 60% of participants with support coordination in their plan. Level 2 coordinators help you implement your plan, connect with providers, resolve service issues, monitor your budget, and build your capacity to manage your own supports over time.

Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination costs up to $194.39 per hour. This level is for participants with complex support needs, significant barriers to service access, or situations involving risk, crisis, or multiple service systems. Specialist coordinators generally hold qualifications in social work, psychology, occupational therapy, or a related field.

Both levels are funded from Capacity Building and do not reduce your Core Supports budget. The number of hours funded in your plan is determined during your NDIS planning meeting based on your assessed needs. If you believe you need more hours, raise this at your next plan review with supporting evidence from your current coordinator.

Support coordination and plan management are separate services funded from separate budget categories. Having both does not affect either allocation. Many participants benefit from having a plan manager handle finances while their support coordinator focuses on plan implementation.

Support coordination is fully funded by the NDIS through the Capacity Building budget under the "Support Coordination" support category. There is no out-of-pocket cost to you.

NDIS Capacity Building: To access support coordination, your NDIS plan must include funding in the Capacity Building budget for this support category. Not all plans include support coordination. If yours does not, request it at your next planning meeting or plan review. Explain how support coordination will help you implement your plan and achieve your goals. If you have complex needs, difficulty finding providers, or have not been using your plan effectively, these are strong reasons the NDIS will consider.

Level 2 versus Level 3: The NDIS funds either Level 2 or Level 3 based on your assessed needs. Some participants have both levels funded, allowing them to use a specialist coordinator for crisis or complex situations and a standard coordinator for routine plan implementation. Your NDIS planner determines the appropriate level based on your circumstances.

Plan management and support coordination together: These are separate services funded from separate budget lines. Plan management (Improved Life Choices) handles your financial administration, invoice payments, and budget tracking. Support coordination (Capacity Building) handles plan implementation, provider connections, and system navigation. Having both does not reduce either budget. Most participants with complex needs benefit from having both.

Changing coordinators: You can change support coordinators at any time. Give notice as required by your service agreement, typically 14 days. Engage a new coordinator before ending the existing arrangement to ensure continuity, particularly if a plan review is approaching.

A support coordinator helps you turn your NDIS plan from a document into real, working supports. They connect you with providers, help resolve problems, and build your confidence to manage more of your plan independently over time.

Your first meeting will be a conversation about your goals, your current situation, and what is and isn't working. Your coordinator will review your NDIS plan with you, explain what funding you have, and identify which supports need to be set up or changed. This initial meeting is typically in person if you prefer, or by phone or video.

From there, your coordinator develops a service implementation plan. They research providers in Avalon and surrounding areas, arrange introductions or trial sessions, help you understand service agreements, and ensure services start within your plan timeframes. A good coordinator gives you genuine choice by presenting multiple options, not just steering you toward one provider.

Ongoing support involves regular check-ins, usually monthly at minimum. Your coordinator monitors how providers are performing, whether your budget is on track, and whether your supports are helping you progress toward your goals. If something is not working, they address it directly with the provider or help you find an alternative.

As your plan review approaches, your coordinator prepares evidence to support your next plan request. This includes progress reports from providers, documentation of goal achievement, and clear justification for continued or increased funding. This preparation work significantly affects the outcome of plan reviews and is one of the most valuable parts of support coordination.
