Why people choose private home care
Private funding sits alongside the NDIS, Home Care Packages, and DVA programs. It is the right option when speed, flexibility, or specific supports matter more than cost.
Fastest access
No waitlists. Most providers can begin within days. Useful when a Home Care Package is approved but not yet released, or when needs change quickly after a hospital discharge.
Full choice of provider
Not limited to government-contracted providers. Choose any registered or unregistered provider that meets your standards on training, experience, and cultural fit.
Choose your supports
No assessor decides what you can spend on. Direct any private spend toward the supports you actually want, including options that government funding may exclude.
Top up government funding
Many people use private funds alongside an HCP, NDIS plan, or DVA entitlement to cover gaps, weekend hours, or higher-cost specialists.

Indicative private-pay cost guide
Rates vary by region, provider, and time of day. The ranges below reflect typical private-pay rates across metropolitan Australia. Get a written quote before engaging any provider.
Indicative only. Confirm rates directly with each provider before commencing services.
Private vs other funding pathways
Most people use a mix. Here's how private compares to each government pathway, and where they overlap.
Home Care Package (HCP)
6–12 months wait, capped budget
Private starts in days; private only pays for what you choose.
Support at Home (SAH)
Replacing HCP from 2025–2027, contribution rates vary
Private avoids the eligibility assessment; useful for short-term needs while waiting for SAH.
CHSP
Lower-intensity supports, fee-for-service
Private is faster and broader; CHSP is cheaper for limited needs.
NDIS
For people under 65 with permanent disability
Private supplements NDIS for spending NDIS won’t cover (food, accommodation, lifestyle activities).
DVA / veterans
Card-type-dependent eligibility
Private fills DVA gaps when a service is not on your accepted condition list.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I pay privately when I could apply for a Home Care Package?
HCP wait times can run 6–12 months and assessed budgets do not always cover what you need. Private funding fills the gap during the wait, supplements an active package, or simply gives you faster access if your priority is starting now.
Are private providers regulated?
Quality varies. NDIS-registered and Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission–registered providers operate under formal standards. Unregistered providers can still be excellent but their accountability sits with you. Always check insurance, worker screening, references, and complaints process.
Can I claim private home care on tax or Medicare?
Most private home care is not Medicare-rebatable. Allied health may be partly claimable through private health insurance extras cover or under a Chronic Disease Management plan. Speak to your accountant or health fund for specifics.
Can I switch from private to a Home Care Package later?
Yes. Many people start private and apply for an HCP in parallel, then switch when their package becomes available. Some providers offer a "private now, package later" pathway with the same care worker, so continuity is preserved.
How do I choose between providers when there are no government rules to compare them on?
Look at five things: insurance and worker screening, written quote with no hidden surcharges, formal complaints policy, online reviews and references, and clear cancellation terms. Carevo lists providers with these signals visible so you can compare them at a glance.
