How to check a provider's credentials

Carevo lists the registration details a provider reports and links you to the official Australian registers so you can confirm them before referring a participant. Here is what each listing shows and where to verify it.

NDIS registration

Listings show whether a provider reports being NDIS registered. You can confirm a provider's current registration and approved support types yourself on the NDIS Commission's public provider register.

Source: NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Aged care approval

Listings show aged care approval where it is recorded. You can check a provider's current approval and the services they deliver on the Australian Government's My Aged Care find a provider service.

Source: My Aged Care (Department of Health and Aged Care)

ABN you can check

Most listings include the provider's Australian Business Number, shown on the profile. You can look it up on the Australian Business Register to confirm the business is registered and active.

Complaints process

If you or a participant has a concern, the NDIS Commission handles complaints about NDIS providers and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission handles aged care complaints. We also accept complaints via our own channel.

About Daily Living and Life Skills

Development of Daily Living and Life Skills covers training and support to build participant independence. This includes cooking skills, budgeting, public transport training, personal hygiene routines, household management, and community navigation. Funded under Capacity Building, the goal is to reduce long-term support needs by building the participant's own capabilities.

With 1,385 providers across all states and territories, daily living and life skills is a specialist registration group. Provider availability varies by location, so check suburb-level results for accurate coverage.

Daily Living and Life Skills Pricing

The following NDIS price limits apply under the 2025-26 NDIS Pricing Arrangements. These are maximum rates for standard metropolitan areas. Remote and very remote loadings apply in eligible areas.

What Daily Living and Life Skills Covers

The Daily Living and Life Skills registration group includes the following services. When referring, match the specific service type to the participant's plan goals and funded line items.

Independent Living Skills

Training in cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, shopping, and other household management skills. The goal is building independence, not doing tasks for the participant.

Travel Training

Structured training to use public transport independently. Usually involves a graduated program from accompanied travel to monitored travel to fully independent travel.

Personal Development

Building self-advocacy skills, decision-making, problem-solving, and self-management. Particularly important for participants transitioning to more independent living.

Technology Skills

Learning to use smartphones, computers, assistive technology apps, online banking, and other digital tools that support independent living.

Common Referral Scenarios

Real-world situations where you would refer a participant for daily living and life skills.

1.

A young participant is preparing to move out of the family home. Refer to a provider that offers a structured independent living skills program covering all aspects of household management, not just one or two skills.

2.

A participant wants to use public transport to get to their day program independently. Refer to a provider with a specific travel training program that includes risk assessment, graduated training steps, and a clear endpoint.

3.

A participant has difficulty managing their finances and regularly runs out of money before the end of the fortnight. Refer to a provider who can teach budgeting skills and set up practical systems (apps, visual budgets) the participant can maintain independently.

What to Expect After Referral

Capacity Building providers should set specific, measurable goals with clear timelines. Expect an initial assessment of current skill levels, a structured training plan, regular progress measurement, and a defined endpoint. This is not open-ended support. The NDIA expects to see skill improvement over time, so ensure the provider documents baseline and progress data you can use in plan reviews.

Red Flags to Watch For

Warning signs that a daily living and life skills provider may not be delivering quality services.

Provider doing tasks for the participant instead of teaching them

No baseline assessment or measurable goals

No evidence of skill progression over time

Open-ended engagement with no planned reduction in support

Provider unable to articulate their training methodology

No written progress reports suitable for plan reviews

Daily Living Skills development works with Daily Personal Activities (gradually replacing hands-on support with training), Community Participation (applying life skills in real-world settings), and Employment (building job-readiness skills). When a participant is receiving both personal care and skills training, ensure different workers are not undermining each other by doing tasks the other is teaching.

Referral Tips for Daily Living and Life Skills

Life skills development should have clear, measurable goals tied to the participant's NDIS plan. When referring, ensure the provider documents baseline skills, sets time-bound targets, and provides progress evidence you can use in plan review reports. This is Capacity Building funding, so the NDIA expects to see capability improvement over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between daily living support and daily living skills development?

Daily living support (Core Supports) is hands-on help doing tasks like showering or cooking. Daily living skills development (Capacity Building) is training to learn those tasks independently. The first maintains current functioning; the second builds new capabilities. Different funding buckets, different provider requirements, different reporting expectations.

Can I refer an NDIA-managed participant to an unregistered provider?

No. NDIA-managed participants can only use NDIS registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use both registered and unregistered providers.

How do I check if a provider is NDIS registered?

Check the NDIS Provider Register at provider.ndis.gov.au. Search by provider name or ABN. Providers listed on Carevo display their registration status on their profile.

What information should I include when making a referral?

Include the participant's name (with consent), NDIS plan number, relevant line items, budget available, service frequency, specific requirements (cultural, language, gender preference), and your contact details.
