How this list is ordered: by profile substance: self-reported checks and credentials, weighted toward the NDIS Worker Screening Check, a photo and a completed profile, the practical details shown on each card (availability, travel range, ABN), experience up to ten years, and how recently the worker joined. Payment plays no part in ordering, higher placement is not a recommendation, and everything a worker reports remains self-reported unless marked otherwise.

Families never pay Carevo. Providers pay a subscription to connect with families, with no commission or paid ranking. How Carevo works

How hiring a private nurse at home works

A private nurse is a nurse you hire directly for nursing care at home, rather than through an agency. Self-managed and plan-managed participants, and self-funded families, can arrange private nursing care at home this way.

01

Tell us what you need

Describe the support you want, where you need it, and when. You only fill this in once, and it takes about a minute. There is no obligation and nothing to pay.

02

Matched workers claim it

Carevo shares your request with matched private nurses, and with agencies where you want them. Anyone interested connects and reaches out to you, so several people can respond, not just one.

03

You choose who to talk to

You end up with a shortlist of people who actually want the work. Talk only to the ones you choose, and agree the arrangement between you.

Since Carevo launched, 400+ requests for nursing have been submitted through Carevo Australia-wide. How we calculate our numbers

What it costs

Rates are agreed directly between you and the worker. As a reference point, the NDIS price limit for Delivery of Health Supports by an Enrolled Nurse - Weekday Daytime (01_600_0114_1_1) is $103.44 an hour as of 22 July 2026 (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). Price limits apply to plan-managed and NDIA-managed supports; self-managed participants can negotiate different rates under their funding rules. Independent workers set their own rates, which may be below or above what a provider charges.

NDIS price examples by support item
When NDIS price limit (per hour)
Delivery of Health Supports by an Enrolled Nurse - Weekday Daytime (01_600_0114_1_1) $103.44
Delivery of Health Supports by a Registered Nurse - Weekday Daytime (01_606_0114_1_1) $128.05

Published support item limits, NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27, effective 22 July 2026. These are caps, not going rates; you and the worker agree the actual figure.

An ABN and invoices do not by themselves make a worker an independent contractor: what matters is the real working relationship (Fair Work guidance). Check how your arrangement is classified rather than assuming. Where it amounts to employment, the applicable award and classification determine the minimum rate; for many disability support roles this is the SCHADS award. As one example, a level 2 social and community services employee starts at $36.22 an hour. Casual employees also receive a 25% loading, and 12% superannuation applies (Fair Work pay guides, as of 1 July 2026).

Carevo does not set, take a cut of, or guarantee any rate.

Who can use this

Funding type Hire directly? Notes
Self-managed NDIS Subject to support rules You can engage individual workers directly.
Plan-managed NDIS Subject to support rules Your plan manager pays the worker's invoices.
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) Only if NDIS registered Those budgets can only pay registered providers.
Support at Home (aged care) Ask your provider Funds are administered through your Support at Home provider; ask them how individual workers fit their arrangements. Support at Home replaced the Home Care Packages Program on 1 November 2025.
Private payment Yes NDIS funding rules do not apply, but normal tax, insurance, safety and any employment obligations still do.

How each NDIS arrangement works is set out on the NDIA's ways to manage your funding page. Confirm your own arrangement with your plan manager before starting services.

Hiring safely

When you hire independently, the screening a provider would normally do is yours to do. Do these checks before engaging someone:

  • Sight their checks yourself. Ask to see the NDIS Worker Screening Check, an ongoing clearance for disability work, and a Working with Children Check if children are involved. A police check is not a substitute: it is a point-in-time record search, not a clearance, though it is worth sighting where a worker holds no screening check. Profiles here show what a worker has self-reported; the documents are the proof.
  • Ask for two references from previous care arrangements, and call them.
  • Confirm their ABN and insurance. Check the ABN on ABN Lookup and ask for evidence of public liability and personal accident cover. An ABN alone does not settle whether the arrangement is contracting; see the note under What it costs.
  • Put the arrangement in writing: rate, hours, duties, notice period, and what happens when either of you cancels.
  • Trial before you commit. After checking their documents and references, arrange a paid trial shift before committing to an ongoing arrangement.

Useful questions for a first conversation: What experience do you have with needs like ours? What does a typical shift with you look like? What happens if you are sick? Why did your last arrangement end?

Private nurse or a provider organisation?

Neither is simply better. The honest trade:

Independent worker Registered provider
RateAgreed directly between you and the workerQuoted by the provider; managed funding price limits apply where relevant
ContinuityYou engage the worker directly, which gives you more control over who comesDepends on the provider's rostering
Cover when they are sickYours to arrange; there is no automatic replacementMay arrange replacement cover, subject to staffing and its service arrangements
Screening and supervisionYou do itProvider is audited against the NDIS Practice Standards
Funding typesSelf-managed and plan-managedAll, including agency-managed
AdminYou handle agreements and invoicesProvider handles it

Some families use both: a private nurse for regular shifts, a registered provider for cover and complex supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check that a private nurse is registered?
Search the nurse by name on the AHPRA Register of Practitioners on the AHPRA register. It shows current registration, the division (registered or enrolled nurse) and any conditions or undertakings. Registration details on a Carevo profile are self-reported and have not been sighted by Carevo, so check the register yourself before any clinical task begins.
What is the difference between a registered nurse and an enrolled nurse?
A registered nurse (RN) completes a bachelor degree and practises independently, including assessment and care planning. An enrolled nurse (EN) completes a diploma and works under the supervision of an RN. Both are AHPRA registered. Which one you need depends on the clinical task, so describe the task when you ask.
What can a private nurse do at home?
Common at-home nursing includes wound care, medication management and administration, catheter and stoma care, continence support, diabetes management, post-hospital monitoring and palliative support. Scope of practice differs between an RN and an EN, so confirm the specific task the nurse is able to carry out.
How much does a private nurse at home cost?
Nurses set their own rates and they vary with the clinical task, the time of day and whether the visit is short or a full shift. NDIS caps for nursing supports are published in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and are listed in the facts on this page. Ask for the full rate card including travel and minimum visit length in writing.
Can NDIS or Support at Home funding pay for private nursing?
NDIS funds nursing as a support where it relates to a participant's disability, and self-managed and plan-managed participants can engage a nurse directly. NDIA-managed budgets can only pay registered providers. Under Support at Home, clinical care including nursing is funded through your provider, so ask them what is covered before arranging it yourself.
What is the difference between hiring a private nurse and using a nursing agency?
An agency rosters its own nursing staff, carries the insurance and supervision, and sends a replacement when someone is unavailable. Hiring directly means you choose the individual nurse and usually pay less, but you confirm registration, insurance and cover arrangements yourself. Compare home nursing providers if you would rather an organisation managed it.
