What the role involves

Recovery coaching is a specific NDIS support designed for participants with psychosocial disability, which means disability arising from mental health conditions. As a recovery coach working through Carevo’s network in Australia, your job is to help participants build the skills and confidence to manage their own supports, engage with their community, and work toward goals that matter to them.

This is not the same as case management or clinical treatment. Recovery coaches take a strengths-based, coaching approach. You work alongside the participant rather than directing them. A typical week might include meeting a participant to review how their current supports are working, helping them prepare for a plan review, supporting them to make contact with a service they have been reluctant to approach, or working through a crisis plan together.

You will also write progress notes and contribute to NDIS reporting, so clear written communication is important. Recovery coaching sits within the Capacity Building budget of an NDIS plan, under Support Coordination.

Who you would support

Participants who receive recovery coaching often have diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or severe anxiety and depression. Many will have had difficult experiences with services in the past and will take time to build trust. The ability to show up consistently, listen without judgment, and stay focused on what the person wants for their own life is at the heart of this work.

In Australia and surrounding areas, providers deliver recovery coaching across a range of settings including participants’ homes, community spaces, and sometimes by phone or video. Some recovery coach jobs in Australia include a degree of work from home, with remote check-ins and reporting alongside in-person visits.

Pay and working arrangements

Pay for NDIS recovery coaches is typically based on the NDIS Price Guide, with rates varying depending on the time of day, day of week, and whether you are employed by a provider or working as an independent contractor. Carevo does not set pay rates. Those details are agreed between you and the provider who contacts you.
