What the role involves

Support coordinators help NDIS participants understand their plans, find and connect with service providers, and build their own capacity to manage their supports over time. It is a coordination role, not a direct support role. You are working at the system level, untangling complexity and making sure the right pieces come together for each participant.

In Australia and surrounding areas, a support coordinator might spend a day responding to a participant whose support worker has resigned, helping another participant prepare documentation for a plan review, and talking through a service agreement with a provider on behalf of a third. No two participants have the same situation, so the ability to read a plan carefully, identify gaps, and take action quickly is what separates an effective coordinator from an average one.

NDIS progress reports are a core deliverable. You will write these regularly, evidencing how funding has been used and what outcomes the participant has achieved. Clear, factual writing matters here. Because much of the role is phone, email, and report work, some support coordinator jobs in Australia include a degree of work from home alongside in-person meetings.

Specialist support coordination is a separate, higher-complexity tier for participants with more significant needs or risks. If you have a background in mental health, disability, or complex case management, you may be well-suited to specialist roles.

Who you would support

Participants who receive support coordination often have physical, intellectual, or psychosocial disability, and may have multiple support needs across health, housing, employment, and community participation. Some have had little experience navigating formal systems before their NDIS plan was approved and need significant orientation. Others are experienced self-advocates who need a coordinator mainly for brokerage and reporting.

Pay for support coordinators is influenced by your qualifications, years of experience, whether you are employed by a registered provider or operating as an independent contractor, and the support category being funded. Carevo does not set rates. The provider who contacts you is the right person to discuss terms with.
