What the role involves

NDIS transport drivers help participants with disability and older Australians get where they need to go safely and on time. Transport is not always the most visible support in the NDIS, but for many participants it is the support that makes everything else possible. Without reliable transport, medical appointments get missed, community activities become out of reach, and independence shrinks.

In Australia and surrounding areas, transport drivers typically assist participants to get to and from health appointments, day programs, work, shopping centres, and social activities. The role goes beyond driving. You help participants board and alight from the vehicle, handle mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers, and check in on how the person is travelling throughout the journey. You are often the first or last person a participant interacts with on any given day.

Wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) experience is valuable for participants who cannot transfer out of their chair. If you drive your own vehicle, it needs to meet roadworthiness and insurance requirements set by the provider you work with.

Some roles are regular, structured runs at the same times each week. Others are more flexible and on-demand. The type of work varies across providers.

Who you would support

You may support adults with physical disability, intellectual disability, or mental health conditions, as well as older Australians who can no longer drive themselves. Some participants are quite independent and simply need transport from A to B. Others may need a higher level of support during the journey, particularly if they have communication differences or become distressed in unfamiliar situations.

When a provider identifies your profile as a match, they contact you directly. You discuss the arrangement, the participants involved, and the expected schedule before deciding whether to take it on. You are not locked into anything just by registering.

Pay and working arrangements

Pay for NDIS transport drivers depends on whether you are employed by a provider or operating as an independent contractor, the type of vehicle you use, the time and day of shifts, and the state you work in. Carevo does not set or guarantee rates. Terms are agreed directly between you and the provider who contacts you.
