Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly are allied health services enquiries responded to?
Across 1363 allied health services accepted enquiries on Carevo, the median enquiry acceptance time is 9 minutes. 67% of allied health services enquiries nationally have enquiry details accepted within 1 hour, and 88% within 24 hours. This is the national figure for one service, so it differs from any North Wollongong figure above, which covers every service in the suburb.
How many allied health providers are there in North Wollongong?
There are currently 23 allied health providers serving North Wollongong listed on Carevo. These include multidisciplinary practices, NDIS registered providers, aged care approved providers, and sole-practitioner specialists across various disciplines.
How much do allied health services cost in North Wollongong?
Allied health rates in North Wollongong typically range from NDIS therapy price limit $193.99/hour (2026-27 NDIS Pricing Schedule); fully government funded at no cost under Support at Home per session depending on the discipline and provider. Psychology and specialist assessment services tend to sit at the higher end. Some services may attract Medicare rebates or be covered by NDIS or HCP funding.
Which allied health disciplines are funded by the NDIS?
The NDIS funds a wide range of allied health services under Capacity Building Supports, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, podiatry, dietetics, exercise physiology, and psychology. Each discipline must be linked to your disability-related needs and goals in your NDIS plan.
Do I need a GP referral for allied health services?
For NDIS-funded and private allied health services, a GP referral is generally not required. If you want to access Medicare rebates through a GP chronic condition management plan, you will need a referral from your GP. For psychology under Better Access, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.
Can I access multiple allied health disciplines through one provider?
Yes. Many practices in North Wollongong offer multiple allied health disciplines under one roof, which simplifies scheduling and coordination. When comparing providers on Carevo, check which disciplines each practice offers to see if you can consolidate your care.
What is the difference between allied health and medical care?
Allied health professionals are qualified health workers who are not doctors, nurses, or dentists. They focus on rehabilitation, therapy, assessment, and prevention. Examples include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and podiatrists. Medical care refers to services provided by doctors and specialists.
Can allied health services be delivered at home?
Yes. Many allied health providers in North Wollongong offer home visits. Home-based delivery is particularly suitable for people with limited mobility, those recovering from surgery or illness, older Australians, and NDIS participants who benefit from therapy in their own environment.
How do I find the right allied health provider for my needs?
Start by identifying which discipline is most relevant to your goals. Use Carevo to compare 23 providers in North Wollongong by registration status, disciplines offered, and service area. Contact shortlisted providers directly to ask about wait times, fees, and their experience with your specific condition or diagnosis.

How Much Do Allied Health Services Cost in North Wollongong?
Allied health service rates in North Wollongong typically range from NDIS therapy price limit $193.99/hour (2026-27 NDIS Pricing Schedule); fully government funded at no cost under Support at Home depending on the discipline, the provider, and the type of session. Some disciplines such as psychology and neuropsychology sit toward the higher end of the range. Others such as dietetics or speech pathology may be slightly lower. All rates are influenced by the therapist's experience, whether the session is in-person or via telehealth, and the funding source.
For NDIS participants, most allied health disciplines are funded under Capacity Building Supports, 'Improved Daily Living.' Some support coordination and therapy assistant services fall under different line items. The NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits set maximums for registered providers, which are updated periodically. Check the current pricing document on the NDIS website for the latest rates.
Home Care Package holders can fund allied health services from their package budget. This is relevant across all HCP levels. Higher package levels allow more hours of allied health support. Your package coordinator can help you plan and arrange services within your budget.
Medicare provides rebates for several allied health disciplines through referrals under a GP chronic condition management plan and the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. Private health insurance may also cover some services under extras policies.

How to Pay for Allied Health Services in North Wollongong
Allied health services in North Wollongong can be funded through several programs. The most suitable option depends on your diagnosis, age, and existing support packages.
NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme): Most allied health disciplines are funded under Capacity Building Supports, 'Improved Daily Living.' Psychology for mental health may fall under different support categories. Your plan must include the relevant budget. Self-managed participants can engage any therapist. Plan-managed participants can use registered or unregistered providers through their plan manager. NDIA-managed participants need registered providers.
Home Care Packages (HCP): All four HCP levels can fund allied health. Older Australians commonly access physiotherapy, podiatry, occupational therapy, and dietetics through their package. Your package coordinator will arrange services and manage funding. Confirm the provider's rates before starting.
Medicare: Through a GP chronic condition management plan, you can access up to five allied health visits per year with a Medicare rebate. Eligible disciplines include physiotherapy, OT, podiatry, speech pathology, dietetics, and exercise physiology. Psychology is accessible under the Better Access initiative with a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
Private health insurance: Many extras policies cover allied health visits. Rebate amounts and annual limits vary by policy and discipline. Check with your insurer before booking.
Private payment: All providers accept private payment. This gives you the most flexibility and requires no referrals or funding approvals for most services.
What to Expect from Allied Health Services in North Wollongong
Allied health services cover a broad range of therapies and assessments. Each discipline has a distinct focus, but all share a goal of improving your function, health, and quality of life.
The process starts with a referral or self-referral depending on the service. For Medicare-funded visits, you will need a GP referral. For NDIS or private services, you can usually contact providers directly. Carevo connects you with providers across multiple disciplines in North Wollongong, so you can compare options and reach out to the ones that suit your needs.
At your first appointment, the therapist will assess your current situation, health history, and goals. They will explain their recommended approach and what a course of sessions might involve. Home-based visits are available from many providers across disciplines, which is particularly useful if you have limited mobility or transport.
Some people need one discipline, others benefit from a coordinated approach across two or more. For example, an NDIS participant might see an OT for home modifications and equipment, a physiotherapist for mobility, and a speech pathologist for communication. Providers who offer multiple disciplines under one organisation can simplify coordination.
Progress is reviewed regularly. If a service is not meeting your goals, raise this with the provider. A good therapist will adjust the plan or recommend a more appropriate service if needed.

New South Wales Regulations & Compliance
In New South Wales, NDIS providers may be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and registered providers comply with the NDIS Practice Standards. Registration is mandatory only for specified supports and circumstances, such as specialist disability accommodation, plan management, and supports involving regulated restrictive practices. Self-managed and plan-managed participants may generally choose registered or unregistered providers; NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Aged care services operate under the Aged Care Quality Standards enforced by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Registered providers are audited against the NDIS Practice Standards, and workers in risk-assessed roles need NDIS worker screening through the NSW NDIS Worker Check.

Language support in North Wollongong
North Wollongong has a large Mandarin-speaking community (2.8% of residents), so finding allied health services in a shared language matters here. These are the main languages spoken at home locally (ABS Census 2021). When you get matched, ask providers which of their staff speak your language and whether they can keep that worker as your regular. Interpreters are free through TIS National for NDIS appointments, and My Aged Care can arrange them for aged care assessments.
Speaker counts are persons using the language at home in this postcode. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Census of Population and Housing 2021 (table G13). Carevo connects families with providers and does not deliver care itself.
Response figures are based on 90 allied health services requests across New South Wales over the last 180 days, as we do not yet have enough requests in North Wollongong to report a local figure. 27% of those requests received no response. How we calculate our numbers
How we rank providers
Rankings in North Wollongong use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.
- How this list is built. Providers shown here list Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Pathologist, Psychologist, Exercise Physiologist, Podiatrist, Dietician, Audiologist, Music Therapist, Art Therapist, Orthoptist, Chiropractor, Osteopath, and Diversional Therapist among their professions, or offer physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, exercise physiology, podiatry, dietetics, audiology, massage therapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, music therapy, art therapy, allied health, and therapy.
- Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
- Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
- Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
- Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
- Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
- Local presence. Providers confirmed in North Wollongong rank above those covering only the broader region.
What the enquiries status means
It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.
- Receiving
- At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
- Not receiving
- Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
- No status shown
- We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.
A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.
What the Carevo activity rating means
The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.
- Where it starts
- Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
- What moves it
- Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
- How it is kept honest
- Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.
It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.
