Looking for a CHSP provider that is actually taking new clients? Carevo is a connection platform that helps you compare entry-level aged care services and costs, then connects you with vetted Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) providers near you who respond. Find CHSP providers near you.

The hard part of finding CHSP providers is not the My Aged Care register. It is that most of the providers listed on it are not taking new clients. People call provider after provider and hear “we have a waitlist” or “we are not accepting new CHSP referrals right now”. This guide uses Carevo’s own lead routing data to show who actually takes on Commonwealth Home Support Programme work, then covers eligibility, services, real costs, and the 2026 Support at Home transition.

Reviewed against health.gov.au and myagedcare.gov.au on 2 July 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funds entry-level aged care so older Australians can stay independent at home.
  • Being on the My Aged Care CHSP register does not mean a provider is taking new clients. The gap is large.
  • In Carevo’s routing data, of the 5,909 providers we have sent CHSP requests to, only 376 have ever taken one on, fewer than 7%.
  • Most services need no comprehensive assessment, so CHSP can start within days once you find a provider with capacity.
  • CHSP contributions are voluntary and set by each provider. You cannot be refused service for inability to pay.
  • CHSP continues as its own program. Its move into Support at Home is now planned for no earlier than 1 July 2027.

Who actually takes CHSP clients

The My Aged Care register lists thousands of approved CHSP providers. That is the number most guides quote. It is also the number that misleads people, because the register records who is approved to deliver CHSP, not who is available to take you on this month.

Carevo routes real CHSP help requests to local aged care providers and records who accepts. That gives a clearer picture of supply on the ground than any register. Of the 5,909 providers we have notified about a CHSP-funded request, only 376 have ever claimed one. Across 13,538 CHSP requests we have routed, only 551 were picked up, roughly 1 in 25.

The shortfall is even clearer by state. The table below compares how many providers are on the CHSP register against how many we have actually seen take on a new CHSP request.

Tasmania and the Northern Territory have too few requests through Carevo to report a reliable figure, so they are left out of the table rather than shown as zero.

How we know this, and what it means. These figures come from Carevo’s own lead routing. When a family asks us for CHSP-funded help, we notify nearby aged care providers and record who accepts. A provider not accepting a request through Carevo does not prove it takes no CHSP clients anywhere. But the gap between the hundreds of providers listed in each state and the far smaller number who actively respond matches what families tell us repeatedly: many CHSP providers have long waitlists or have quietly paused new intake.

What to do with this. Do not pin your hopes on one provider off the register. Contact several at once, and when you call, ask the direct question: “Are you taking new CHSP clients right now, and what is the wait?” Carevo does this fan-out for you, then surfaces the providers that actually respond.

Providers actively taking CHSP

The providers below have a track record of actively accepting CHSP-funded requests routed through Carevo, ranked by how reliably they take them on rather than by how they appear on a register. This is the same logic our local CHSP provider pages use. Capacity changes week to week, so treat this as a starting shortlist and confirm current availability when you make contact.

How we built this list. We looked at real CHSP-funded requests sent to local providers and kept only those that have genuinely taken CHSP work on, hold a claimed and verified Carevo profile, and deliver core CHSP services such as personal care, domestic assistance, social support, meals or transport. We rank by actual acceptance, not by advertising or registration status. “States active” shows the states where the provider currently wins work. Disclosure: this list is published by Carevo, a connection platform that connects families with providers and does not deliver care itself.

What is CHSP?

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme is an Australian Government program that funds entry-level support so older people can keep living safely and independently at home. It is the first step in aged care for most people, sitting below the higher-funded Support at Home program.

CHSP is administered by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. For the official overview, see the department’s Commonwealth Home Support Program page.

What makes CHSP accessible:

  • Most services need no comprehensive assessment, just a short My Aged Care screening.
  • You can mix services and use more than one provider at the same time.
  • It is heavily government-subsidised, with only a voluntary client contribution.
  • There is no income or assets test, and you cannot be refused for inability to pay.

Who is eligible for CHSP

CHSP is for older people who need a bit of help to stay independent but do not yet need intensive care.

  • 65 and over for the general population.
  • 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • 50 and over (or 45 and over if on a low income) for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

You also need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and you need to genuinely need support to keep living at home. Eligibility is confirmed through a short phone screening with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

What CHSP covers

CHSP funds practical, entry-level support rather than clinical or round-the-clock care. The common services are:

  • Domestic assistance: light cleaning, laundry, ironing.
  • Personal care: help with showering, grooming and dressing.
  • Meals: delivered meals or help preparing food.
  • Transport: to appointments, shopping and social activities.
  • Social support: companionship, group activities and outings.
  • Home maintenance and modifications: minor repairs, gardening, grab rails and safety work.
  • Nursing and allied health: medication support, wound care, physiotherapy, podiatry, occupational therapy.
  • Respite: short breaks for carers.

If you need several of these regularly, or you need clinical care most days, that is usually a sign to look at Home Care Packages and Support at Home rather than CHSP.

Find a CHSP provider near you

There are three practical ways to find a CHSP provider, and the trick is to use them together rather than one at a time.

1. My Aged Care

Start at myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422. The phone team can do your eligibility screening and give you referral codes that providers need before they can start CHSP services. If you are new to the portal, our guide to the My Aged Care portal walks through setting up your account and using the provider search.

2. Contact several providers at once

Because so many listed providers are not taking new clients, contacting one at a time wastes weeks. Shortlist four or five local providers and ask each the same questions:

  • Are you taking new CHSP clients right now?
  • What is the current wait for the service I need?
  • What client contribution do you charge, and what is your hardship policy?

3. Use Carevo to fan out the request

Carevo connects families with vetted providers across 2,619 aged care providers in the directory, spanning 1,797 suburbs with provider supply. Instead of you ringing around, we route your request to local providers and surface the ones that respond and have capacity, which is the part the register cannot tell you. Across the aged-care and NDIS requests we route, personal care is the most-requested support (855 recent inquiries), and providers typically claim a personal-care request within a median of 12 minutes.

Connect with CHSP providers near you.

What CHSP actually costs

CHSP is government-subsidised, so you only pay a client contribution, not the full cost of care.

  • Contributions are voluntary and set by each provider, not fixed nationally.
  • Providers cannot refuse you service if you genuinely cannot afford to contribute.
  • Hardship arrangements, reduced contributions and payment plans are available.

Because there is no national fixed price, be wary of any guide that quotes exact dollar figures as if they apply everywhere. The reliable approach is to ask each provider for their written contribution schedule and hardship policy before you start. The official fee principles are explained on My Aged Care.

Under the new Support at Home program your contributions work differently, based on a classification level and a means-tested rate. If you are likely to move up to that program, estimate your Support at Home budget and contributions first, and check your funding options with our aged care funding calculator.

CHSP and the Support at Home shift

Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025. CHSP still exists as a separate program. Its move into Support at Home has been deferred and is now planned for no earlier than 1 July 2027, so CHSP services continue under existing arrangements in the meantime while being aligned with the broader reforms.

What this means for you:

  • Current CHSP services continue as normal.
  • Access and assessment are aligned with the Single Assessment System, which replaced ACAT, RAS and ACAS on 9 December 2024.
  • If your needs grow, you can request a comprehensive assessment and move up to Support at Home while keeping continuity of care where possible.

What the 2026 Senate inquiry found

A Senate inquiry in February 2026 raised concerns about the planned transition from CHSP to Support at Home. The Inspector General of Aged Care told the committee on 11 February 2026 that the transition “lacks clarity” and warned of the risk of longer wait times under the new system.

The Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) supported merging CHSP with home care packages in principle, but said royal commission recommendations on funding models, including block, activity-based and individual funding, need proper attention before the transition proceeds. The Inspector General also recommended improvements to the My Aged Care portal.

For people relying on CHSP now, the practical takeaway is to stay in regular contact with your providers as the changeover approaches, and to expect some uncertainty around wait times during the transition.

Your rights and how to complain

CHSP providers must meet the Aged Care Quality Standards, and you are protected by the Charter of Aged Care Rights: safe and quality care, dignity and respect, and freedom from abuse and neglect. If something goes wrong, raise it with your provider first, then contact the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission or an independent advocate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find CHSP providers near me?

Use the My Aged Care provider search at myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422 for referral codes. Because many listed providers are not taking new clients, contact several at once and ask directly whether they have capacity. Carevo can route your request to local providers and surface the ones that respond.

Why do CHSP providers not call me back?

Being on the My Aged Care register does not mean a provider is taking new entry-level clients. Many have long waitlists or have paused intake. In Carevo’s data, only a few hundred providers nationally actively pick up new CHSP requests, so contacting one provider at a time often leads to dead ends.

Can I use multiple CHSP providers at once?

Yes. You can receive different services from different providers at the same time, for example meals from one and personal care from another. It also gives you backup if one provider has no capacity.

What does CHSP cost?

CHSP is government-subsidised. Providers ask for a voluntary contribution they set themselves, and they cannot refuse service if you genuinely cannot pay. There is no national fixed price, so ask each provider for their contribution schedule and hardship policy before you start.

What is the difference between CHSP and Support at Home?

CHSP provides entry-level services and most services need no comprehensive assessment. Support at Home, which replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025, needs a comprehensive assessment through the Single Assessment System and funds more intensive ongoing care.

Summary

CHSP is the entry point to aged care for most older Australians, and the services are genuinely affordable. The real obstacle is capacity: thousands of providers are listed, but only a fraction are taking new clients at any given time. Do not rely on a single name off the register. Contact several providers at once, ask directly about capacity and contributions, and use a connection platform to surface the providers who actually respond.

For information and referral codes, visit myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422. To connect with CHSP providers taking new clients near you, start with Carevo’s CHSP service.
