Can you hire an independent worker?

It depends on how the NDIS plan is managed.

Self-managed: Yes; You agree the rate directly, within the funding rules and your budget.
Plan-managed: Yes; At or under the applicable price limits.
NDIA-managed: No; Registered providers only.

Registration rules and sources

Some supports require registration whatever the plan type, including specialist behaviour support and plan management. Check current SIL registration and transition requirements before arranging SIL.

A worker's professional registration, NDIS provider registration and a profile on Carevo are three different things. A Carevo listing establishes neither kind of registration.

NDIS disability support and clinical mental-health treatment have different funding pathways (NDIA therapy guidance).

Confirm the rules for the specific support before booking. Sources: NDIA self-management, NDIS Commission registration rules.

How this list is ordered: by profile substance (self-reported checks and credentials, weighted toward the NDIS Worker Screening Check, a photo and a completed profile, the practical details shown on each card, experience up to ten years, and how recently the worker joined) blended with distance from Devonport; workers whose stated travel range does not reach Devonport appear last. Payment plays no part in ordering, higher placement is not a recommendation, and everything a worker reports remains self-reported unless marked otherwise.

Families never pay Carevo. Providers pay a subscription to connect with families, with no commission or paid ranking. How Carevo works

How to find and hire a support worker

Hiring a private support worker, also called an independent support worker, means you find a support worker and engage them directly rather than through a provider's roster.

Tell us what you need

Describe the support you want in Devonport, where you need it, and when. You only fill this in once, and it takes about a minute. There is no obligation and nothing to pay.

Matched workers claim it

Carevo shares your request with matched independent support workers nearby, and with agencies where you want them. Anyone interested connects and reaches out to you, so several people can respond, not just one.

You choose who to talk to

You end up with a shortlist of people who actually want the work. Talk only to the ones you choose, and agree the arrangement between you.

Since Carevo launched, 7 requests for personal care and daily support have been submitted through Carevo by people in Devonport. How we calculate our numbers

What it costs

Rates are agreed directly between you and the worker. As a reference point, the NDIS price limit for Assistance With Self-Care Activities - Standard - Weekday Daytime (01_011_0107_1_1) is $73.58 an hour as of 22 July 2026 (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). Price limits apply to applicable managed supports; self-managed participants can negotiate rates under their funding rules. Independent workers set their own rates, which may be below or above what a provider charges.

Carevo does not set, take a cut of, or guarantee any rate.

Who can use this

Funding type	Hire directly?	Notes
Self-managed NDIS	Subject to support rules	You may engage the worker directly where the support allows it. Mandatory registration rules still apply.
Plan-managed NDIS	Subject to support rules	Confirm eligibility, price limits and registration requirements with your plan manager before booking.
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)	Only if NDIS registered	Use registered providers in Devonport.
Support at Home (aged care)	Ask your provider	Funds run through your Support at Home provider; ask them first.
Private payment	Yes	NDIS funding rules do not apply, but normal tax, insurance, safety and any employment obligations still do.

Before you hire

Sight the worker's checks yourself: the NDIS Worker Screening Check (an ongoing clearance; a police check is a point-in-time record search, not a substitute), plus a Working with Children Check where relevant. Everything on a profile is self-reported.
Confirm their ABN and insurance, and ask for two references you can call.
Agree rate, hours and cancellation terms in writing before the first shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many independent support workers work near Devonport?

3 independent support workers within about 30 km of Devonport are registered on Carevo, 3 of them reporting checks and credentials. All profile details are supplied by the workers themselves.

Can I use my funding to pay an individual worker?

Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants can engage individual workers directly where the specific support and registration rules allow it. Agency-managed budgets can only pay registered providers. In aged care, Support at Home (which replaced the Home Care Packages Program on 1 November 2025) funds run through your Support at Home provider, so ask them first. Check with your plan manager before you start.

Are these workers vetted by Carevo?

No. Checks and credentials are self-reported by each worker; Carevo has not sighted or verified them, and a listing is not an endorsement. Sight the documents yourself and ask for references before engaging anyone.
