What a Support Gardener Does

Gardeners working with NDIS participants and aged care clients do much the same work you would do for any residential client: mowing lawns, edging, weeding garden beds, pruning shrubs and small trees, clearing gutters, raking leaves, mulching, and keeping paths clear so the outdoor areas are safe to move through.

The difference is the context. You are helping someone maintain a home they might otherwise have to leave. For an older person in Australia whose mobility has declined, an overgrown yard is not just an inconvenience, it is a safety risk and a source of stress. For an NDIS participant whose disability prevents them doing physical outdoor work, a reliable gardener is part of what makes independent living possible.

What Providers Want in a Gardener

Providers working with NDIS and aged care clients look for gardeners who are reliable, communicate clearly with participants, and understand that they are working in someone’s home. Experience matters, as does the ability to take direction from participants who have strong ideas about their garden.

Your police check and NDIS Worker Screening Check need to be current. If you plan to do anything that involves basic construction or hard landscaping, a White Card is also required.
