What a Handyperson Does in NDIS and Aged Care

Handypersons working with NDIS participants and aged care clients tackle the everyday home maintenance tasks that keep a house safe and liveable. This is practical work: fixing a sticking door, assembling furniture, hanging a grab rail, patching a hole in the wall, replacing a tap washer, changing smoke detector batteries, touching up paintwork, or clearing a blocked drain.

You are not replacing licensed tradespeople. Part of the role is knowing when a job has gone beyond what a handyperson should do and flagging that clearly to the participant and their provider. But a large amount of what keeps an older person or NDIS participant’s home functional falls squarely within handyperson scope, and providers in Australia need people who can do that work reliably and respectfully.

The participants you support are often older Australians who can no longer safely do these jobs themselves, or NDIS participants whose disability means home maintenance is not something they can manage independently. For these clients, having a dependable handyperson visit regularly is not a luxury, it is a practical support that helps them remain safely at home.

How Carevo Works

Carevo is not a jobs board that advertises fixed vacancies. It is a curated availability directory that connects skilled workers with NDIS and aged care providers across Australia.

Here is the process. You register your availability, skills, and current certifications with Carevo. Carevo makes your profile visible to providers in its network who need handyperson support in and around Australia. When a provider has a participant who needs help at home, they can view your profile and contact you directly. You review the work and decide whether it suits you.

You are not competing for a single advertised position. You are becoming visible to multiple providers in Australia and nearby areas simultaneously.

What Providers Look For

Providers want handypersons who are competent, reliable, and good with people. Working in occupied homes means you are interacting with vulnerable participants, and providers take that seriously. You should be comfortable explaining what you are doing, working at a pace that suits the participant, and leaving the space tidy when you are done.

A White Card is required for anyone doing work that touches on construction, even minor work. Your police check and NDIS Worker Screening Check must be current.

What handyperson pay looks like

Handypersons providing home care and NDIS minor maintenance are generally paid under the SCHADS Award home care stream, typically at Level 1 to 2 depending on the skill of the work.

Weekday$27 to $32 an hour
Saturday$40 to $48 an hour
Sunday$53 to $63 an hour
Public holiday$66 to $79 an hour

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of these rates (often quoted as roughly $34 to $40 an hour for ordinary casual hours).

Indicative hourly rates based on the SCHADS Award (MA000100), reviewed July 2025. Modern award rates are national and do not vary by state. Pay is set by each provider and can be higher under an enterprise agreement. General information only, not financial advice.

How getting care work compares

Most care workers find work by searching a job board or signing on with an agency. Carevo works differently: you register your availability once, and providers in the network reach out to you. The work comes to you instead of you chasing it.
