What the role involves
An NDIS plan manager handles the financial side of a participant’s plan. The work centres on paying provider invoices on time, tracking spending against each budget category, and giving participants regular statements that show what has been used and what remains. It is a finance and administration role, not a direct support role.
A typical week in Australia might involve processing invoices from a range of providers, checking that claimed amounts sit within the NDIA pricing arrangements and price limits, reconciling budgets, and answering questions from participants who want to know if they can afford a particular service. Accuracy matters, because you are working with someone else’s funding and providers depend on being paid promptly.
It is worth being clear about how this role differs from support coordination. A plan manager looks after the money: invoices, claims, budgets, and reporting. A support coordinator connects participants with services and helps them put their plan into action. The two roles are funded under different parts of an NDIS plan, and a participant can have both. If you have a bookkeeping, accounting, or finance background, plan management is usually the closer fit.
Plan management fees come from the Improved Life Choices budget, a separate line that does not reduce a participant’s Core or Capacity Building funding. Understanding how that funding works helps you explain it clearly to the people you support.
Who you would support
You would support NDIS participants who have chosen to have their plan managed rather than handling claims themselves or having the NDIA manage everything. They include people with physical, intellectual, and psychosocial disability, and their families and carers. Some are confident with budgets and simply want invoices paid quickly. Others need patient explanations of what their funding covers. Many also work with a support coordinator, so you would liaise with coordinators and providers as part of the role.

Pay and working arrangements
Pay for plan managers depends on your qualifications, your experience, and whether a provider engages you as an employee or as a contractor. Carevo does not set rates. The provider who contacts you is the right person to discuss terms with.
Plan management work is often office based or fully remote, so work from home arrangements are common for roles near Australia. Hours can be full time, part time, or casual depending on what the provider needs and what you have listed as your availability.

What plan manager pay looks like
NDIS plan managers handling participant budgets and invoicing are generally paid under the SCHADS Award social and community services stream at around Level 3 to 5, reflecting the financial and administrative nature of the role.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of these rates. Most coordination and plan-management roles are weekday office-based, so weekend penalties rarely apply.
