What the role involves

Support workers help people with disability and older Australians live as independently as possible, stay connected to their communities, and do the things that matter to them. It is hands-on work that looks different from one participant to the next.

In Australia and surrounding areas, support workers assist with personal care such as showering, dressing, and grooming; help with meal preparation and medication reminders; support participants to get out into the community for shopping, appointments, recreational activities, or social visits; and provide companionship and consistent, reliable presence in people’s lives. Some participants also need assistance with light household tasks or maintaining safe living environments. Community support worker jobs in Australia often focus on this community access side of the role.

The work can include high-intensity support for participants with complex needs, such as those with acquired brain injury, challenging behaviour, or significant physical disability. It can also involve lower-intensity support for someone who mainly needs assistance getting to appointments and staying engaged with their community.

Following a participant’s support plan carefully is important. Plans set out agreed goals, routines, and any specific requirements for how support should be delivered. Documentation, including shift notes and incident reports where relevant, is part of the job.

Who you would support

Most support workers through Carevo’s network work with NDIS participants, though some also work in aged care settings. Participants may have physical disability, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, acquired brain injury, mental health conditions, or a combination of these. Each person has their own personality, preferences, and goals, and the best support workers take the time to understand who they are supporting rather than just following a checklist.

Pay and working arrangements

Support worker pay is set by the relevant industrial award and the NDIS Price Guide, and varies based on time of day, day of week, and level of support required. Pay rates and any other working conditions are agreed directly between you and the provider who contacts you. Carevo does not set or guarantee pay.
