What the role involves

Support workers help people with disability and older Australians live as independently as possible, stay connected to their communities, and do the things that matter to them. It is hands-on work that looks different from one participant to the next.

In Waterloo and surrounding areas, support workers assist with personal care such as showering, dressing, and grooming; help with meal preparation and medication reminders; support participants to get out into the community for shopping, appointments, recreational activities, or social visits; and provide companionship and consistent, reliable presence in people’s lives. Some participants also need assistance with light household tasks or maintaining safe living environments. Community support worker jobs in Waterloo often focus on this community access side of the role.

The work can include high-intensity support for participants with complex needs, such as those with acquired brain injury, challenging behaviour, or significant physical disability. It can also involve lower-intensity support for someone who mainly needs assistance getting to appointments and staying engaged with their community.

Following a participant’s support plan carefully is important. Plans set out agreed goals, routines, and any specific requirements for how support should be delivered. Documentation, including shift notes and incident reports where relevant, is part of the job.

Who you would support

Participants may have physical disability, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, acquired brain injury, mental health conditions, or a combination of these. Pay and working arrangements

Support worker pay is set by the relevant industrial award and the NDIS Price Guide, and varies based on time of day, day of week, and level of support required.
