Families never pay Carevo. Providers pay a subscription to connect with families, with no commission or paid ranking. How Carevo works

Activity figures describe Carevo enquiries, not appointments or care quality. Acceptance timing excludes unclaimed enquiries. Confirm current capacity directly. Measurement period and method.

How we rank providers

Rankings in Australia use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Household tasks and Daily Personal Activities, or offer meals. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
  • Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
  • Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australia rank above those covering only the broader region.

What the enquiries status means

It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.

Receiving
At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
Not receiving
Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
No status shown
We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.

A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.

What the Carevo activity rating means

The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.

Where it starts
Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
What moves it
Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
How it is kept honest
Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.

It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.

How much does meal preparation cost in Australia?

Meal Preparation in Australia typically costs Labour subsidised under NDIS or Support at Home (food not covered); CHSP delivered meals about $1.50-$15 per meal means-tested; provider-set. Actual rates vary by provider, funding type, and the level of support required.

How to pay for meal preparation

Funding options include aged care, NDIS, DVA or private fees. Eligibility depends on your assessment and plan.

NDIS price limits for meal preparation

These are selected support items relevant to this service, not a funding approval or a complete list. Confirm the task, practitioner, plan and item before booking. Price limits apply to NDIA-managed and plan-managed purchases where the pricing rules apply. Self-managed participants can negotiate above or below these limits.

Where can I find CHSP meal providers near me?

The official list of subsidised meal providers is the Find a provider tool on My Aged Care, which covers every organisation funded to deliver meals under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (My Aged Care, 2026). The ranked list above narrows that field to providers with current coverage in Australia and measured response times on Carevo. Meal preparation is named in 305 of the 9,483 tracked inquiries on the platform.

What is meal preparation support?

Meal preparation support is in-home help with planning, shopping for and cooking meals, including menu adjustments for conditions like diabetes or dysphagia. Under Support at Home, it sits within the Everyday Living service category, where the labour is subsidised but the cost of food itself is not (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

A worker might cook a batch of meals to portion and freeze, prepare a fresh lunch and dinner, help with a shopping list, or adapt recipes to a dietician’s advice. The aim is regular, safe meals for someone who finds shopping and cooking hard to manage alone.

Does the NDIS pay for meal preparation and delivery?

Yes, for the work and not for the food. The NDIS funds the labour of preparing and delivering meals under Core Supports - Assistance with Daily Life, where the participant cannot manage it because of their disability; the cost of food and ingredients stays with the participant, because food is an everyday living cost (NDIS Our Guidelines, nutrition supports). That applies to both forms of the service: a support worker who cooks in your kitchen, and an NDIS meal provider that delivers prepared meals and invoices the preparation and delivery portion to your plan. The NDIA says it generally funds support that helps you build the skills to do these tasks yourself, and that prepared and delivered meals may be needed for a limited time.

Ask a delivered-meal provider how each meal splits between the funded portion and the food you pay for, because that split decides what leaves your plan and what leaves your bank account. NDIA-managed participants need a registered provider; plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered ones.

How to choose a meal provider from the list above

The list above is ranked using the criteria explained in the methodology above it. Four checks matter specifically for meal support.

Delivery model. Some providers cook in the home, others deliver prepared meals, and many do both, so say which you prefer.

Dietary capability. If you need texture-modified, diabetic, or allergy-aware meals, confirm the provider handles that requirement in practice, not just on its brochure.

Funding administration. A CHSP-funded provider claims the subsidy and bills you a contribution; an NDIS provider invoices your plan for labour only. Confirm the provider works in your funding lane.

Carevo measures whether a provider accepts an enquiry, not when care starts or a practitioner contacts you. Confirm current capacity and a start date directly. How Carevo measures enquiry acceptance.

In-home meal preparation or delivered meals: which do you need?

They solve different problems. In-home preparation puts a worker in your kitchen: fresh cooking, help with the shopping list, batch cooking to freeze, and company during the visit. Delivered meals arrive ready to heat, cost less per meal, and need no rostered visit, which suits people who can manage reheating but not cooking. Many households use both, a delivered base with one or two fresh-cooked sessions a week. The ranked list above covers providers for both models.

How much does meal preparation cost, and who pays?

Under CHSP, the government subsidy covers the cost of preparing and delivering the meal, and the client pays for the ingredients, the food they would have bought anyway (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2026). Each provider sets its own client contribution under its contribution policy, so ask for the per-meal price in writing. CHSP continues to at least 1 July 2027.

Under Support at Home, meal preparation labour comes out of your quarterly budget as an Everyday Living service, with a means-tested participant contribution, while food stays your own expense. NDIS participants can claim preparation and delivery labour under Core Supports - Assistance with Daily Life, while food costs remain the participant’s own everyday living expense (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). Veterans may qualify through DVA-funded home care, and anyone can pay a provider directly: see private funding options.

Who qualifies for meal preparation assistance for the elderly?

The service is for older people and NDIS participants who find shopping or cooking unsafe or difficult due to age, illness, disability or fatigue. People 65 and over (50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) enter through My Aged Care, where an assessment under the Single Assessment System decides the lane: CHSP for entry-level support with a modest contribution, or Support at Home with one of eight funding classifications for higher needs (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). People under 65 with a permanent disability access meal support through the NDIS where the need is linked to their disability.

Can a support worker cook with me rather than for me?

Yes, and for NDIS participants that is often the better use of funding. Cooking together is capacity building: planning a menu, budgeting the shop, safe knife and stove work, and building confidence to manage some meals independently, and it can sit alongside a goal in the plan. Aged care works the same way in practice. CHSP and Support at Home both take a wellness and reablement approach, so a worker who peels vegetables beside you while you direct the meal is doing the job as designed, not cutting corners.

Why is nutrition risk higher for older people living alone?

Appetite drops with age, cooking for one can feel pointless after a bereavement, and fatigue or arthritis makes chopping and lifting hard work. The common result is a tea-and-toast pattern: less protein, fewer vegetables, skipped meals, and slow weight loss nobody notices until a fall or admission. Regular meal support is partly about the food and partly about a worker who sees the empty fridge and says something early. If weight is already dropping or a condition calls for a therapeutic diet, pair meal preparation with nutritional support for aged care.

Diet often ties directly to a health condition. Texture-modified meals for someone with swallowing difficulty (dysphagia), lower-sugar meals for diabetes, or softer options after dental work all need a worker who understands the requirement. For families in Australia arranging support, it helps to write down any dietary needs and allergies before the first visit so the provider can match the right person.

Availability

Availability varies by area, so the practical question is which providers already work in Australia and can fit around meal times rather than a mid-afternoon slot. Households in Australia often pair meal prep with other domestic help to make the most of a support visit.

Carevo currently lists 34,600 providers across 8,918 suburbs, including those offering meal preparation alongside broader domestic assistance support, with records updated 2026-08-26. For the entry-level aged care pathway, start with the Commonwealth Home Support Programme; for the assessed pathway, see the Support at Home programme.

What do Meals on Wheels and delivered meals cost?

Delivered meals for older Australians are subsidised, not free, and the contribution is set by each provider rather than nationally.

Meals on Wheels is not a single organisation with one price list. It is a network of local services, most funded through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, and each sets its own client contribution per meal. That is why quoted prices differ between towns and why the national brand has no single menu or price.

The pattern is consistent: a subsidised main meal costs a modest contribution per meal, with soups, desserts and special diets priced separately. Frozen multi-meal packs generally cost less per meal than daily hot delivery, because delivery is the expensive part. Special diets, including texture-modified meals for people with swallowing difficulty, are usually available and sometimes cost more.

Access runs through My Aged Care. A CHSP assessment is the usual entry point, and a Support at Home participant can instead draw meal costs from their quarterly budget (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). Under both, you pay for the food itself; the subsidy covers preparation and delivery, because government funding does not pay for the ingredient cost of ordinary food.

Delivered meals or a support worker who cooks?

These are different services with different funding and different reasons to choose them.

Delivered meals suit someone who can no longer shop and cook safely but can heat and eat independently. It is the cheaper option, it needs no worker in the home, and it scales to seven days a week easily.

Meal preparation by a support worker suits someone who needs supervision, wants food to their own taste, or where the visit is doing double duty as a welfare check and social contact. It costs support worker rates by the hour rather than a per-meal contribution, so it is more expensive per meal but delivers more than a meal.

Many households run both: frozen delivered meals on most days, and a support worker cooking a batch weekly. If swallowing is a concern, involve a dietitian before choosing, because texture-modified diets need to be prescribed rather than improvised.

How this page is compiled

The provider rankings and figures on this page come from Carevo platform records, including provider registrations, measured response times and coverage, together with the cited official sources. Carevo is an Australian platform that connects families with NDIS and aged care providers. Carevo does not deliver care itself.

Funding sources and checks

Check the current NDIA pricing arrangements and Support at Home program rules for the proposed service. Funding depends on the approved support and available budget; a Carevo listing is not approval. Confirm availability and a start date directly with the provider.

What meal preparation costs

Labour subsidised under NDIS or Support at Home (food not covered); CHSP delivered meals about $1.50-$15 per meal means-tested; provider-set

NDIS price limits are national. They do not vary by state or territory, but most items carry higher limits in remote (MMM6) and very remote (MMM7) areas.

Remote areas attract a 40 per cent loading and very remote areas 50 per cent on most priced supports. The plan management monthly fee is flat across all three. A provider may charge less than the limit. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can also use unregistered providers, who set their own rates.

Source: NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27 (effective 1 July 2026). Prices are what a provider may charge, not what you will pay: your funding, plan management type and service agreement decide that.

Australian Regulations & Compliance

NDIS providers may be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and registered providers comply with the NDIS Practice Standards. Registration is mandatory only for specified supports and circumstances, such as specialist disability accommodation, plan management, and supports involving regulated restrictive practices. Self-managed and plan-managed participants may generally choose registered or unregistered providers; NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Aged care services operate under the Aged Care Quality Standards enforced by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Providers are subject to regular audits and must maintain worker screening in accordance with state and territory requirements. Participants have the right to make complaints, change providers, and access independent advocacy at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a subsidised meal cost?
Under CHSP the government subsidy covers preparing and delivering the meal and you pay for the ingredients, the food you would have bought anyway, at a per-meal contribution each provider sets under its own policy. Ask for the per-meal price in writing. Under Support at Home, meal preparation labour comes from your quarterly budget with a means-tested contribution, while food stays your own expense.
Does My Aged Care pay for meals?
Partly. Aged care funding pays for the labour of preparing and delivering meals, not the food itself. CHSP subsidises delivered meals for people with entry-level needs; Support at Home funds in-home meal preparation as an Everyday Living service for people with one of the eight classifications (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).
Can I get texture-modified or diabetic meals delivered?
Yes, from providers that handle the requirement in practice rather than on a brochure. A speech pathologist prescribes the texture level for swallowing difficulty and a dietitian checks the modified diet still delivers enough energy and protein. Write down dietary needs and allergies before the first visit so the provider matches the right worker or menu.
In-home cooking or delivered meals: which is better?
They solve different problems. In-home preparation puts a worker in your kitchen for fresh cooking, shopping help and company. Delivered meals arrive ready to heat, cost less per meal and need no rostered visit, which suits people who can reheat but not cook. Many households use a delivered base plus one or two fresh-cooked sessions a week.
How quickly do Meal Preparation providers respond to enquiries?
Based on 904 accepted enquiries on Carevo, providers accept details of meal preparation enquiries after a median of 7 minutes. 64% of enquiries have details accepted by a provider within 1 hour, and 85% within 24 hours among accepted enquiries. Unclaimed enquiries are excluded; acceptance does not measure contact or care starting.
