What is in-home psychology?

In-home psychology is one-on-one therapy delivered by an AHPRA-registered psychologist in a client’s home rather than a clinic, covering conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and NDIS psychosocial goals. Psychologists complete a minimum six-year training pathway and must hold current registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA, 2025).

How to choose a provider for this service

The list above is ranked using the criteria explained in the methodology above it. Four checks matter specifically when you compare psychology providers.

Registration. Confirm the psychologist holds current AHPRA registration with the Psychology Board of Australia, not a shorter counselling qualification, particularly if your NDIS plan requires a formal assessment or report.

Response time. Anxiety, agoraphobia and post-crisis referrals often can’t wait weeks for a first session. Check a provider’s actual reply speed against the response-time table further down this page rather than a stated turnaround.

Pricing transparency. Ask whether sessions are billed at the NDIS hourly rate, a Medicare Better Access gap fee, or a private rate, and get this confirmed in writing before the first session.

Which funding pays for in-home psychology, and who qualifies?

Psychology for NDIS participants is funded under the Therapeutic Supports registration group, generally through Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living, at a rate of up to $252.99 an hour (NDIS Pricing Arrangements 2026-27); a support coordinator confirms which budget line covers your therapy goals, and some participants with complex behavioural needs also draw on the Behaviour Support stream. For people 65 and over, or 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Support at Home funds psychology as a clinical support where it addresses a mental health, adjustment or cognitive need, following assessment through the Single Assessment System (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). People outside both schemes can use a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan for up to ten Medicare Better Access rebated sessions a year (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).
