How we rank providers

Rankings in Australia are based on real outcomes between providers and families on our platform. They are recalculated daily and cannot be purchased or influenced by advertising.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Assistance with travel/transport arrangements, or offer related disability and aged care services and allied health. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Outcomes with families. We measure what happens after a family contacts a provider. Providers where families report positive outcomes rank higher. Multiple signals are weighted across a rolling window.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Registration and compliance. NDIS registered and government-approved aged care providers are weighted for meeting quality and safeguards standards.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australia rank above those covering only the broader region.

What "Trusted" means. The Trusted badge is awarded to providers with a consistent record of positive outcomes with families on our platform. It is based on multiple behavioural signals and family feedback, and it cannot be purchased.

How much does vehicle modification assessment cost in Australia?

Vehicle Modification Assessment in Australia typically costs $500-$80,000+ (depending on modification type). Actual rates vary by provider, funding type, and the level of support required.

How to pay for vehicle modification assessment

Funding options include NDIS Assistive Technology. Eligibility depends on your assessment and plan.

Getting Behind the Wheel or Into the Car Safely

For many people with disability, getting into a car, driving independently, or being transported safely in a wheelchair is not possible without vehicle modifications. The modifications range from simple hand controls and swivel seats to full wheelchair-accessible vehicle conversions with ramps and tie-down systems.

Every vehicle modification starts with a professional assessment. This is not just best practice. It is a requirement for NDIS funding, and it is a safety requirement under Australian Design Rules and state transport regulations.

Through Carevo, you can connect with vehicle modification assessment providers in Australia who coordinate the full pathway: driving assessment, vehicle assessment, modification prescription, builder coordination, and compliance certification.

Who Performs the Assessment

Vehicle modification assessments involve two types of professionals:

Occupational Therapists (Driver-Trained OTs) OTs with specialist training in driver assessment evaluate whether you can drive safely with modifications, what type of modifications you need, and whether additional driver training is required. They also assess passenger transport needs for people who travel as wheelchair-seated passengers.

Vehicle Modification Engineers and Builders Accredited vehicle modification businesses assess the vehicle itself, design the modifications, carry out the work, and certify compliance with Australian Design Rules. They work from the OT’s prescription to build the right solution.

Types of Vehicle Modifications

Driving Controls

  • Hand controls for accelerator and brake (push-pull, radial, or electronic)
  • Steering aids: spinner knobs, tri-pin grips, joystick steering
  • Left-foot accelerator conversions
  • Electronic secondary controls (indicators, wipers, horn, lights)

Wheelchair and Scooter Access

  • Wheelchair hoists and lifts (boot-mounted or internal)
  • Lowered floors for wheelchair-seated passengers
  • Rear or side-entry ramps
  • Wheelchair docking and tie-down systems
  • Swivel seats and transfer platforms

Passenger Safety and Comfort

  • Swivel seats for easier entry and exit
  • Seat raisers and lowering systems
  • Harness and postural support systems
  • Child restraint modifications for children with disability

Vehicle Selection Advice Not every vehicle can be modified for every purpose. Your assessor can advise on which vehicles are suitable for the modifications you need before you purchase.

The Assessment and Modification Pathway

  1. Referral. Your support coordinator, GP, or rehabilitation specialist refers you for a driving and vehicle assessment.
  2. OT driving assessment. A driver-trained OT evaluates your physical and cognitive capacity for driving, identifies required modifications, and writes a prescription report.
  3. Vehicle assessment. The modification builder inspects the vehicle (or advises on vehicle purchase) and provides a detailed quote.
  4. Funding application. The OT report, builder quote, and supporting documentation are submitted to NDIS (or other funder) for approval.
  5. Modification. The accredited builder carries out the work. Complex conversions can take several months.
  6. Compliance certification. The modified vehicle is inspected and certified compliant with Australian Design Rules and state registration requirements.
  7. Handover and training. You receive training in operating the modifications, and the OT may recommend additional driving lessons with an instructor who has a modified vehicle.

Funding Vehicle Modifications

  • NDIS Assistive Technology: Vehicle modifications are funded under NDIS AT supports. An AT assessment report from a qualified OT is required. The NDIA assesses whether the modification is reasonable and necessary in relation to your disability and transport goals.
  • NDIS Transport: Some transport-related costs may be funded under the Transport support category in your NDIS plan.
  • DVA: The Department of Veterans’ Affairs funds vehicle modifications and driving devices for eligible veterans. Cover is provided under the Vehicle Assistance Scheme (VAS) for those with qualifying service under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986, or the Motor Vehicle Compensation Scheme (MVCS) for those covered by the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004. Which scheme applies depends on your service history, and DVA can confirm your eligibility.
  • Motor Accident Insurance: If your disability resulted from a motor vehicle accident, modifications may be funded through your CTP or motor accident compensation scheme.
  • State Programs: Some states offer vehicle modification assistance. Your OT can advise on state-specific options.

What the NDIA Looks For

Vehicle modification funding through NDIS requires strong justification. The assessment report must demonstrate:

  • The modification is directly related to your disability.
  • It supports your stated NDIS goals (employment, community participation, independence).
  • Alternative transport options have been considered and are insufficient.
  • The proposed modification is the most cost-effective solution that meets your needs.
  • The vehicle is suitable for modification and has sufficient remaining lifespan to justify the investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get NDIS funding for a new wheelchair-accessible vehicle? The NDIS funds modifications to vehicles, not the purchase or lease of vehicles. This includes the price difference between a standard vehicle and a larger or more suitable one. You must own, buy or lease a suitable vehicle yourself; the NDIS then funds the reasonable and necessary modifications.

Do I need a new driving assessment if I already have a licence? If you are requesting modifications to how you control the vehicle (hand controls, steering aids), a driving assessment by a specialist OT is required to confirm you can operate the modified vehicle safely. If you are only requesting passenger modifications (wheelchair access, swivel seat), a driving assessment may not be needed, but an OT assessment of your transport needs is still required.

How long does a full vehicle conversion take? Simple modifications like hand controls can be installed in a few days. Wheelchair hoist installation typically takes one to two weeks. Full wheelchair-accessible vehicle conversions with lowered floors and ramp systems can take three to six months depending on the builder’s schedule and the complexity of the work.

Who certifies the modifications? All vehicle modifications must comply with Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and be certified by an approved vehicle modification signatory or engineer. The vehicle must pass a compliance inspection before it can be re-registered for road use. Your modification builder handles this process.

Vehicle modifications are one part of a broader mobility and independence picture. You may also benefit from wheelchair and mobility equipment assessment, home modifications for accessible parking and entry, or a full assistive technology assessment to address both transport and daily living needs.
