Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly do providers respond to enquiries in Brisbane City?
Based on 571 accepted enquiries on Carevo in Brisbane City, providers accept enquiry details with a median of 4 minutes. 69% of enquiries in Brisbane City have enquiry details accepted within 1 hour, and 83% within 24 hours. This covers every service in Brisbane City, so it differs from the meal preparation figure below.
How quickly are meal preparation enquiries responded to?
Across 875 meal preparation accepted enquiries on Carevo, the median enquiry acceptance time is 7 minutes. 64% of meal preparation enquiries nationally have enquiry details accepted within 1 hour, and 86% within 24 hours. This is the national figure for one service, so it differs from any Brisbane City figure above, which covers every service in the suburb.
How many meal preparation support providers are there in Brisbane City?
There are currently 121 meal preparation support providers listed for Brisbane City on Carevo. These include CHSP-approved services, Home Care Package providers, and private providers.
How much does meal preparation support cost in Brisbane City?
Subsidised meal preparation support in Brisbane City typically costs Labour subsidised under NDIS or Support at Home (food not covered); CHSP delivered meals about $1.50-$15 per meal means-tested; provider-set per meal or around $45 to $65 per hour for in-home cooking assistance. CHSP clients pay a small co-contribution. HCP clients draw from their package budget. Private rates apply without any subsidy.
Does meal preparation support include the cost of food?
No. Support programs fund the labour involved in preparing meals, not the groceries themselves. You are responsible for having food available or arranging grocery delivery. Some workers can help with grocery lists or unpacking deliveries as part of their visit.
Can meal preparation support accommodate special diets?
Yes. Most providers can work with diabetic, low-sodium, heart-healthy, gluten-free, texture-modified, and culturally specific dietary requirements. Let the provider know about any dietary needs before the first session so they can plan accordingly.
What is the difference between meal preparation support and Meals on Wheels?
Meal preparation support involves a worker coming to your home and cooking meals in your kitchen using your groceries. Meals on Wheels delivers ready-made meals to your door. Preparation support gives you freshly cooked, customised meals. Meals on Wheels is more convenient but offers less customisation.
How do I access CHSP-funded meal preparation support?
Register with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and request an assessment. If eligible, you will be referred to a CHSP provider in your area. The government subsidises the cost and you pay a small co-contribution per visit or per meal.
Can I get meal preparation support through my Home Care Package?
Yes. Meal preparation is commonly included in Home Care Package care plans under Assistance with Daily Life. Your package coordinator will arrange the service and manage payments from your package budget.
What if I need meal preparation help urgently?
Private providers can usually start services quickly without any funding approval process. For subsidised programs, the My Aged Care assessment process can take several weeks. If you need support immediately, consider arranging private services while waiting for funding to be confirmed.

How Much Does Meal Preparation Support Cost in Brisbane City?
Meal preparation support in Brisbane City typically costs Labour subsidised under NDIS or Support at Home (food not covered); CHSP delivered meals about $1.50-$15 per meal means-tested; provider-set per meal when delivered through a subsidised aged care program. In-home meal preparation by a support worker or domestic assistant generally falls within the standard hourly rate for domestic assistance, which ranges from $45 to $65 per hour when subsidised.
For clients on the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, the government covers the majority of the cost and you pay a small co-contribution per meal or per visit. For Home Care Package holders, meal preparation costs come out of your package budget and are negotiated with your provider as part of your care plan.
Private clients pay the market rate directly to the provider. Some meal preparation services charge per meal for delivered options, while in-home cooking support is billed by the hour. Confirm which model applies before booking.
Costs can also vary based on dietary complexity. Standard meals and special diet meals such as texture-modified or diabetic-friendly options may be priced differently. Ask providers about any additional charges for specific dietary requirements.
| Time | Indicative rate |
|---|---|
| In-home meal preparation (subsidised, per meal) | $15 - $25/meal |
| In-home meal preparation (hourly rate, subsidised) | $45 - $65/hr |
| CHSP co-contribution (approximate, per meal) | $5 - $10/meal |
| Private rate (per meal) | $15 - $25/meal |
Rates are indicative. Subsidised rates apply to clients approved through My Aged Care. In-home meal preparation billed by the hour may result in more than one meal being prepared per session. Ask providers for their exact fee schedule.

How to Pay for Meal Preparation Support in Brisbane City
Meal preparation support for older Australians in Brisbane City can be funded through several government programs. The right option depends on your age, living situation, and any existing approvals you hold.
Home Care Package (HCP): Meal preparation is covered under the "Assistance with Daily Life" and "Nutrition and Dietetics" categories of a Home Care Package. Your package coordinator includes it in your care plan. Higher package levels allow for more frequent meal preparation visits or a broader range of services including nutritional assessments.
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP): CHSP provides subsidised meal preparation and meal delivery for older Australians at risk of poor nutrition or who cannot safely cook independently. This includes home-delivered meal programs such as Meals on Wheels. A My Aged Care referral and assessment is required. Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to start the process.
Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA): Veterans with a DVA Gold or White Card may be eligible for funded meal preparation support where a service-related condition affects their ability to cook safely. Contact DVA on 1800 838 372 to confirm eligibility and arrange a referral.
Private payment: Any provider can be engaged privately without a waiting period or funding approval. This works well for clients who need meal preparation support immediately, or whose package budget does not fully cover the frequency they need.
What to Expect from Meal Preparation Support in Brisbane City
Meal preparation support involves a trained worker coming to your home and preparing one or more meals during their visit. The service is designed for older Australians who find it difficult or unsafe to cook independently due to physical limitations, cognitive decline, or recovery from illness.
At your first session, the worker will typically check your kitchen, any available groceries, your dietary preferences, and any restrictions such as allergies, swallowing difficulties, or medical dietary requirements. This information shapes what gets cooked and how. If you have a dietitian or doctor with specific dietary advice, share this with the provider.
A standard session might involve preparing lunch and an evening meal, storing portions safely in the fridge, and leaving clear reheating instructions. Some workers also help with grocery lists or assist with setting up easy-to-access meal options for times when no support worker is present.
The same worker should visit consistently so they become familiar with your preferences and your kitchen. You should feel comfortable directing them on what you want cooked and how. A good provider will check in regularly to see whether the service is working for you and make adjustments to the meal plan as your needs change.
How to check a provider's credentials
Carevo shows register-sourced status fields and links you to the official Australian registers so you can confirm the current entry yourself. Here is what each listing shows and where to check it. A listing on Carevo is not an endorsement.
NDIS registration
Listings show whether a provider reports being NDIS registered. You can confirm a provider's current registration and approved support types yourself on the NDIS Commission's public provider register.

Queensland Regulations & Compliance
In Queensland, NDIS providers may be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and registered providers comply with the NDIS Practice Standards. Registration is mandatory only for specified supports and circumstances, such as specialist disability accommodation, plan management, and supports involving regulated restrictive practices. Self-managed and plan-managed participants may generally choose registered or unregistered providers; NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Aged care services are regulated by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission under federal legislation. Queensland requires all disability workers to hold a current Blue Card (working with people with disability check) in addition to national screening requirements.

Language support in Brisbane City
Brisbane City has a large Mandarin-speaking community (8% of residents), so finding meal preparation services in a shared language matters here. These are the main languages spoken at home locally (ABS Census 2021). When you get matched, ask providers which of their staff speak your language and whether they can keep that worker as your regular. Interpreters are free through TIS National for NDIS appointments, and My Aged Care can arrange them for aged care assessments.
Speaker counts are persons using the language at home in this postcode. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Census of Population and Housing 2021 (table G13). Carevo connects families with providers and does not deliver care itself.
Response figures are based on 27 meal preparation services requests across Queensland over the last 180 days, as we do not yet have enough requests in Brisbane City to report a local figure. 26% of those requests received no response. Measured on enquiries across all services in Brisbane Inner over the last 180 days. In that same period 92.3% of enquiries there reached at least one provider (72 of 78). That is 0.16 enquiries per provider listed across Brisbane Inner in that period (488 at the time, a wider area and an earlier date than the Brisbane City count above). How we calculate our numbers
How we rank providers
Rankings in Brisbane City use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.
- How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Household tasks and Daily Personal Activities, or offer meals. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
- Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
- Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
- Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
- Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
- Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
- Local presence. Providers confirmed in Brisbane City rank above those covering only the broader region.
What the enquiries status means
It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.
- Receiving
- At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
- Not receiving
- Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
- No status shown
- We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.
A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.
What the Carevo activity rating means
The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.
- Where it starts
- Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
- What moves it
- Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
- How it is kept honest
- Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.
It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.
