What are personal care services?

Paid help with the daily tasks most people do for themselves: showering, bathing and drying, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, toileting and continence aid management, safe transfers in and out of bed or a chair, help with eating, and medication prompts. A support worker delivers it in your home at the level of help you actually want.

How we rank providers

Rankings in Australia use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Daily Personal Activities and High Intensity Daily Personal Activities, or offer personal care.
  • Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
  • Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
  • Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australia rank above those covering only the broader region.

What the enquiries status means

It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.

Receiving
At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
Not receiving
Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
No status shown
We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.

A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.

What the Carevo activity rating means

The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.

Where it starts
Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
What moves it
Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
How it is kept honest
Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.

It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.

How to check a provider's credentials

Carevo shows register-sourced status fields and links you to the official Australian registers so you can confirm the current entry yourself. Here is what each listing shows and where to check it. A listing on Carevo is not an endorsement.

NDIS registration

Listings show whether a provider reports being NDIS registered. You can confirm a provider's current registration and approved support types yourself on the NDIS Commission's public provider register.

Source: NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Aged care approval

The aged care approval label is sourced from the Australian Government's My Aged Care provider register. Confirm the current entry and the services listed there before choosing a provider.

ABN you can check

Most listings include the provider's Australian Business Number, shown on the profile. You can look it up on the Australian Business Register to confirm the business is registered and active.

Complaints process

If you have a concern about any provider, you can lodge a complaint with the NDIS Commission or the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission at any time. We also accept complaints via our own channel.

How much does personal care cost in Australia?

Personal Care in Australia typically costs $50-$90/hour (NDIS / Support at Home subsidised rates available). Actual rates vary by provider, funding type, and the level of support required.

How to pay for personal care

Funding options include NDIS, aged care, DVA or private fees. Eligibility depends on your assessment and plan.

NDIS price limits for personal care

These are selected support items relevant to this service, not a funding approval or a complete list. Confirm the task, practitioner, plan and item before booking. Price limits apply to NDIA-managed and plan-managed purchases where the pricing rules apply. Self-managed participants can negotiate above or below these limits.

2026-27 standard (MMM 1-5) limits from the current NDIA catalogue. Meal preparation/delivery items exclude food costs. High-intensity support-worker items are not nursing items. Remote and very remote loadings, and the price history for each item, are on its page. Browse every NDIS support item and price limit.

Personal care under the NDIS

Personal care can be funded through a Home Care Package, the NDIS, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, or privately.

Personal care is paid support with the daily tasks most people do for themselves: showering, dressing, grooming, toileting and moving safely around the home. The NDIS funds it as Assistance with Self-Care Activities inside the Core Supports budget, with hourly caps set in the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27. A support worker delivers it in your home, at the level of help you actually want.

It is the most requested service on Carevo, named in 1,593 of the 9,483 tracked inquiries (data updated 2026-08-26). Price limits for disability support workers rose 3.95 per cent on 1 July 2026, taking the standard weekday self-care cap to $73.58 an hour (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). For older Australians, Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025 and funds the same tasks under eight classifications (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

What is included in NDIS personal care services?

Personal care covers hands-on and prompted help with self-care. Day to day, a support worker helps with:

  • Showering, bathing and drying, with as much or as little help as you choose
  • Dressing and undressing, morning and evening routines
  • Grooming: hair care, shaving, oral hygiene, nail care
  • Toileting and continence aid management
  • Safe transfers in and out of bed or a chair
  • Help with eating and drinking at meal times
  • Medication prompts at the right times

Complex needs, such as PEG feeding or severe dysphagia support, are billed under separate high-intensity items with a $79.60 weekday cap (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27).

Which part of an NDIS plan funds personal care?

Personal care is funded from Core Supports, under the Assistance with Daily Life category. Core is flexible, so you can generally shift funds between daily life, consumables, transport and social participation.

Funding depends on your plan including it and on the support meeting the statutory NDIS support definition introduced on 3 October 2024 by the โ€œGetting the NDIS Back on Trackโ€ changes. Applicable NDIS price limits govern NDIA-managed and plan-managed purchases. Self-managed participants can negotiate above or below them.

NDIS eligibility rules for personal care

Any NDIS participant whose disability affects their ability to manage self-care can ask for personal care in their plan. The planner funds it when it is reasonable and necessary, which usually means evidence of functional impact, often an occupational therapy assessment.

Becoming a participant requires applying before you turn 65, being an Australian citizen, permanent resident or protected SCV holder, and having a permanent and significant disability (NDIS, 2025). If you are over 65 and not already a participant, personal care comes through the aged care system instead.

Does Support at Home cover personal care for older people?

Yes. Personal care is a listed Support at Home service, with eight funding classifications from about $11,031.56 to $80,294 a year (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

From 1 October 2026 personal care moves into clinical supports, which carry no participant contribution. Until then a means-based contribution can apply, so check your situation with your provider or My Aged Care (1800 200 422). CHSP continues as a separate program and moves to Support at Home no earlier than 1 July 2027. Both dates are from the Department of Health and Aged Care (2025).

Four checks that separate providers

The rankings above use the methodology explained at the top of this page. Your own shortlist comes down to four checks:

Registration category. Agency-managed plans can only use providers registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission for Assistance with Daily Personal Activities. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can also use unregistered providers, often cheaper but not audited against the NDIS Practice Standards. Check any registration claim on the Commissionโ€™s public register.

Pricing transparency. A provider should hand you a written rate schedule against the 2026-27 caps without being chased. Vague answers about weekend loadings or travel charges are a warning sign.

Carevo measures whether a provider accepts an enquiry, not when care starts or a practitioner contacts you. Confirm current capacity and a start date directly. How Carevo measures enquiry acceptance.

Coverage and consistency. Ask whether the provider staffs your suburb, not just your city, and whether you get a regular worker rather than a rotating roster. With 32,033 NDIS providers listed on the platform, you do not need to accept a casual pool for intimate care.

Questions to ask a provider before signing a service agreement

  1. What is your NDIS registration number and which registration groups does it cover? A good answer matches the NDIS Provider Register and covers daily personal activities.
  2. Do all your support workers hold NDIS Worker Screening clearances? A good answer is yes, verifiable through the NDIS Worker Screening Database.
  3. Can I see your full rate schedule, including evenings, weekends and travel? Ask for a written schedule and confirm whether the NDIS price limits apply to your funding arrangement.
  4. Who covers shifts when my regular worker is sick or on leave? A good answer is a named, briefed backup process, not โ€œwhoever is freeโ€.
  5. Can I choose the gender of my support worker for intimate care, and will that be written into the agreement? A good answer is yes to both.
  6. Have you ever been subject to Commission compliance action? A good answer is a straight no, consistent with the Commissionโ€™s public compliance register, or an honest account of what changed.

Where providers are available

Personal care providers on Carevo cover 8,918 suburbs nationally, with the deepest supply in the capitals. See the city pages for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, or the suburb directory below for smaller areas. NSW alone has 11,415 listed providers. Many households pair personal care with domestic assistance from the same provider, so one worker covers both.

What personal care costs across each funding system

Personal care is the most-used funded support in Australia and the pricing differs sharply by system, so the same shower visit costs different amounts depending on who pays.

High intensity applies where the support involves complex needs such as ventilation, tracheostomy care, enteral feeding or complex bowel care, and the worker holds the relevant competency. Being assessed as high intensity when the tasks do not require it is a straightforward way to exhaust a Core budget early.

What high intensity personal care means, and who can deliver it

The NDIS distinguishes standard from high intensity supports because some personal care carries clinical risk that ordinary training does not cover.

High intensity daily personal activities include complex bowel care, enteral feeding, tracheostomy management, ventilation support, urinary catheter management, subcutaneous injections, complex wound care and severe dysphagia management (NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, 2025).

The rule that matters is supervision. A support worker can perform many of these tasks, but only after a registered nurse has assessed the task, trained the worker on that specific personโ€™s routine, signed off their competence, and set a review schedule. That delegation is what makes the higher rate legitimate and the arrangement safe.

Ask any provider quoting high intensity: which registered nurse holds oversight, when was the worker signed off, and how often is competency reviewed. A provider that cannot answer is charging a high intensity rate without the structure that justifies it. Compare home nursing providers where the clinical component is substantial.

How this page is compiled

The provider rankings and figures on this page come from Carevo platform records, including provider registrations, measured response times and coverage, together with the cited official sources. Carevo is an Australian platform that connects families with NDIS and aged care providers. Carevo does not deliver care itself.

Funding sources and checks

Check the current NDIA pricing arrangements and Support at Home program rules for the proposed service. Funding depends on the approved support and available budget; a Carevo listing is not approval. Confirm availability and a start date directly with the provider.

What personal care costs

$50-$90/hour (NDIS / Support at Home subsidised rates available)

NDIS price limits are national. They do not vary by state or territory, but most items carry higher limits in remote (MMM6) and very remote (MMM7) areas.

Remote areas attract a 40 per cent loading and very remote areas 50 per cent on most priced supports. The plan management monthly fee is flat across all three. A provider may charge less than the limit. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can also use unregistered providers, who set their own rates.

Source: NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27 (effective 1 July 2026). Prices are what a provider may charge, not what you will pay: your funding, plan management type and service agreement decide that.

Australian Regulations & Compliance

NDIS providers may be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and registered providers comply with the NDIS Practice Standards. Registration is mandatory only for specified supports and circumstances, such as specialist disability accommodation, plan management, and supports involving regulated restrictive practices. Self-managed and plan-managed participants may generally choose registered or unregistered providers; NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Aged care services operate under the Aged Care Quality Standards enforced by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Providers are subject to regular audits and must maintain worker screening in accordance with state and territory requirements. Participants have the right to make complaints, change providers, and access independent advocacy at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does personal care cost per hour?
Under the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27, standard weekday daytime assistance with self-care is capped at $73.58 an hour and high-intensity support at $79.60, with loadings for evenings, weekends and public holidays. Participants whose plan funds it pay nothing out of pocket. Aged care prices are set by each provider because Support at Home caps were deferred in May 2026.
Is personal care funded by the NDIS?
Yes, from Core Supports under Assistance with Daily Life, when your plan includes it and the support meets the statutory NDIS support definition. Core is flexible, so hours can usually be moved between daily life, consumables, transport and social participation without a plan review.
Does Support at Home cover personal care?
Yes. Personal care is a listed Support at Home service across all eight classifications. From 1 October 2026 it moves into clinical supports, which carry no participant contribution; until then a means-based contribution can apply (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).
Who delivers personal care?
Support workers employed by a provider or working independently, not nurses, unless the task is clinical. Ask whether workers hold NDIS Worker Screening clearances, whether you get a regular worker rather than a rotating roster, and whether you can choose the gender of the worker for intimate care and have that written into the service agreement.
What is the difference between personal care and a support worker?
Personal care is one of the tasks a support worker does. A support worker's shift can also cover household tasks, meal preparation, shopping and community access. If you only need help with showering, dressing and transfers, personal care is the narrower service to ask for; if you need the wider mix, compare support worker providers.
Can I get personal care privately without an assessment?
Yes. Private home care needs no My Aged Care assessment or NDIS plan and can usually start within days, at rates set by each provider. It is also the common way to top up a funded budget that runs out before the need does.
How quickly do Personal Care providers respond to enquiries?
Based on 24,761 accepted enquiries across all services on Carevo, the median acceptance time is 4 minutes. 69% of enquiries have details accepted by a provider within 1 hour, and 87% within 24 hours among accepted enquiries. Unclaimed enquiries are excluded; acceptance does not measure contact or care starting.
