Where can I get a home sleep study?

Home sleep studies are arranged through a GP, not found in a directory. Providers range from hospital sleep laboratories that post equipment out, to pharmacy programs, to mobile sleep scientists who set you up at home. The ranked list above narrows Carevo platform records to in-home sleep providers, ordered by measured response times and coverage. Start with your GP: the referral makes the study Medicare-rebatable, and the result needs a doctor to act on it.

What is home sleep science and who is it for?

Home sleep science is in-home assessment and management of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea, CPAP therapy and insomnia, delivered by a credentialled sleep scientist affiliated with the Australasian Sleep Association or the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Medicare rebates apply to GP-referred sleep studies and CPAP titration under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). It suits people with suspected apnoea, CPAP difficulties or chronic insomnia who cannot easily attend a hospital sleep clinic.

How to choose a provider for this service

The list above is ranked using the criteria explained in the methodology above it. For in-home sleep science, four checks matter most.

Credentialling. Confirm the sleep scientist is affiliated with the Australasian Sleep Association or credentialled through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists before booking, since sleep science has no dedicated AHPRA registration board.

Carevo measures whether a provider accepts an enquiry, not when care starts or a practitioner contacts you. Confirm current capacity and a start date directly. How Carevo measures enquiry acceptance.

Pricing transparency. Ask for a written per-visit fee covering assessment, CPAP setup and review appointments, rather than accepting a verbal estimate.

Coverage and coordination. Confirm the provider brings home sleep study and CPAP equipment to your area and reports results back to your GP or respiratory physician.

How much does a home sleep study cost, and how does it compare with a lab study?

A laboratory study means a night in a sleep unit with a technician monitoring a full range of signals. A home study records the core measurements, breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate and sleep position, often brain activity too, using equipment you wear overnight. Home studies suit straightforward suspected apnoea and people who sleep badly in strange places. Laboratory studies remain the recommendation for complex cases: suspected narcolepsy, significant heart or lung disease, or a home study that fails or returns an unclear result. Your GP or sleep physician makes that call, not the equipment provider.

Medicare rebates a home study when a GP or specialist refers you and eligibility criteria are met, usually starting with validated screening questionnaires for suspected obstructive sleep apnoea; the report must come from a qualified sleep medicine practitioner (Services Australia, Medicare Benefits Schedule, 2025). Some providers bulk bill, others charge a gap, and studies arranged without a referral are billed privately at each providerโ€™s rate. CPAP machines and masks are a separate cost: Medicare does not cover the device, some state equipment schemes subsidise machines for eligible concession card holders, and some private health policies contribute. Ask for every figure in writing: study fee, gap, equipment rental, and purchase price.

What is the pathway from bad sleep to treatment?

The pathway runs in five steps: a GP appointment with screening questionnaires; a referred sleep study at home or in a lab; diagnosis by a sleep physician who reviews the recording; a treatment decision, often a CPAP trial of a rental month or more for confirmed apnoea, or lifestyle changes or a dental device for milder cases; then review, because pressure settings and mask fit usually need adjusting early on.

Untreated apnoea is associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so GPs treat daytime sleepiness as worth investigating. People managing diabetes alongside a sleep disorder can compare diabetes education at home providers too.

What does CPAP setup help at home involve?

CPAP fails through small practical problems more often than the therapy itself. A home setup visit covers mask fitting, machine placement, humidifier settings, the cleaning routine, and teaching the person and family to run the machine. Follow-up matters more: adherence is largely decided in the first weeks, so look for a scientist who downloads usage data, fixes leaks and pressure discomfort, and reports back to the GP or sleep physician.

How do sleep problems show up in disability and dementia care?

Sleep disturbance is among the most common reasons families seek overnight support. In dementia, night waking and day-night reversal are frequent and often harder on the carer than the person, and a sleep assessment can rule out treatable apnoea before a family assumes the disruption is just the dementia. On the support side, cognitive support and memory aids covers routines and environmental cues that anchor day and night, and overnight care compares sleepover and active-night arrangements when someone needs a person there, not just a machine. In disability contexts, sleep disorders often go undiagnosed because symptoms are blamed on the disability itself; a GP referral is the first step.

Which funding stream pays for in-home sleep science, and who qualifies?

Support at Home funds sleep-related assessment and CPAP support as a nursing or allied health service where a clinically assessed need is documented in the participantโ€™s support plan, available to people approved under one of the eight funding classifications since the program replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025 (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). People not yet assessed can access support through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, which keeps operating while its move into Support at Home is deferred to no earlier than 1 July 2027 (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). Sleep science sits outside standard NDIS support categories, though participants can claim it under Improved Health and Wellbeing where a sleep disorder is directly linked to disability. Medicare rebates cover GP-referred sleep studies and CPAP titration for everyone else.

How this page is compiled

The provider rankings and figures on this page come from Carevo platform records, including provider registrations, measured response times and coverage, together with the cited official sources. Carevo is an Australian platform that connects families with NDIS and aged care providers. Carevo does not deliver care itself.

Funding sources and checks

Check the current NDIA pricing arrangements and Support at Home program rules for the proposed service. Funding depends on the approved support and available budget; a Carevo listing is not approval. Confirm availability and a start date directly with the provider.

How we rank providers

Rankings in Northern Territory use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Therapeutic Supports, or offer allied health and nursing. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
  • Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
  • Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Northern Territory rank above those covering only the broader region.

What the enquiries status means

It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.

Receiving
At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
Not receiving
Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
No status shown
We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.

A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.

What the Carevo activity rating means

The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.

Where it starts
Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
What moves it
Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
How it is kept honest
Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.

It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.
