Stairlift, platform lift or through-floor lift: which one do you need?

A stairlift suits someone who can transfer onto a seat but can no longer climb stairs safely. It fixes to the stair treads, not the wall, and most straight installations are finished in a day.

An inclined platform lift carries a person seated in their wheelchair up the staircase on a fold-down platform; it needs a wider staircase and suits people who cannot safely transfer out of the chair.

How much does a stairlift cost in Australia?

There is no standard price, and two quotes for the same staircase can differ widely, but supplier price guides published in 2026 give a usable range. A straight stairlift bought outright runs roughly $3,500 to $8,000 installed. A curved stairlift, with a rail custom-made to the staircase, runs $9,000 to $20,000 or more. Renting a straight stairlift costs around $150 to $300 a month, with most suppliers setting a minimum term of about three months. Platform lifts and through-floor lifts sit above the stairlift range because they involve building work. Which funding pays for a stairlift or platform lift, and who qualifies?

Funding depends on why the lift is needed.
