What is a stairlift or platform lift, and who needs one?

A stairlift is a motorised seat that runs on a rail fixed to a staircase; a platform lift carries a wheelchair user vertically or on an inclined rail. Either is prescribed once an occupational therapist assessment confirms stairs are no longer safe to manage, whether from reduced mobility, balance loss or wheelchair use, and is funded as assistive technology or a home modification under the NDIS or the aged care AT-HM Scheme (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

Stairlift, platform lift or through-floor lift: which one do you need?

A stairlift suits someone who can transfer onto a seat but can no longer climb stairs safely. It fixes to the stair treads, not the wall, and most straight installations are finished in a day.

An inclined platform lift carries a person seated in their wheelchair up the staircase on a fold-down platform; it needs a wider staircase and suits people who cannot safely transfer out of the chair.

A vertical platform lift travels straight up and down. Outdoor models bridge a porch or verandah entry, while a through-floor lift travels between storeys through a cut opening. It is the most expensive option but the only one that moves a wheelchair user between levels without a transfer.

An occupational therapist matches the type to the person’s transfers, prognosis and home layout; when a condition is progressive, fund the lift that will still work in five years.

How to choose an installer from the list above

How much does a stairlift cost in Australia?

There is no standard price, and two quotes for the same staircase can differ widely, but supplier price guides published in 2026 give a usable range. A straight stairlift bought outright runs roughly $3,500 to $8,000 installed. A curved stairlift, with a rail custom-made to the staircase, runs $9,000 to $20,000 or more. Renting a straight stairlift costs around $150 to $300 a month, with most suppliers setting a minimum term of about three months. Platform lifts and through-floor lifts sit above the stairlift range because they involve building work. Treat these as the range across suppliers checked in September 2026, not a cap: prices are set by each installer.

The biggest cost driver is the rail. A straight stairlift uses a standard rail cut to length and is the cheapest option. A curved stairlift needs a rail custom-bent to your staircase, usually a multiple of the price of a straight one, and the rail cannot be reused. Staircase length, outdoor models, higher weight capacities and powered swivel seats all add cost. Platform lifts cost more because they involve building work, and through-floor lifts top the range because a floor opening and shaft must be constructed.

Renting or buying refurbished can cut the outlay. Straight stairlifts are widely available to rent, which suits short-term needs like post-surgery recovery, and refurbished units with a new rail are a legitimate saving; curved stairlifts are rarely available either way because the rail is made for one staircase. If a funding body is paying, confirm it accepts rental or refurbished equipment first.

Which funding pays for a stairlift or platform lift, and who qualifies?

Funding depends on why the lift is needed. For NDIS participants, it sits in the Capital Supports budget as a home modification or assistive technology item, approved once an OT assessment shows it is reasonable and necessary for disability-related access, meeting the statutory NDIS supports definition introduced in the NDIS Act changes of 2024. For older Australians, the AT-HM Scheme within Support at Home funds higher-cost lifts under its top tier, up to $15,000 a year, following an OT assessment arranged through My Aged Care (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). How does the assessment and quoting process work?

Both funding systems follow the same sequence. An occupational therapist assesses how the person manages the stairs and recommends a lift type; under Support at Home the OT is arranged through My Aged Care, while NDIS participants use therapy funding. The installer then surveys the site and quotes, and both documents go to the funding body. Higher-cost lifts are quotable items, so nothing is ordered until approval; after installation the OT confirms the lift is safe to use.

Assessment to installation typically runs four to twelve weeks, longer for custom curved rails. Lifts are often approved alongside broader home modifications such as grab rails and bathroom changes, so have the OT assess everything in one visit.

What are the alternatives when a lift is not feasible?

Some staircases are too narrow or steep for any rail, and some rental or strata properties refuse the work. The usual alternative is a ground-floor living conversion: moving the bedroom downstairs and adapting a ground-floor bathroom. It often costs less than a through-floor lift, removes the stairs from daily life entirely, and the same funding streams apply. Where the barrier is a few entry steps, a ramp or a small outdoor platform lift at the door is a far cheaper fix.
