Question 1 of 5 Validity Check

Do you have your Companion Card with you?

Most venues need the physical or accepted digital card to apply companion concessions.

Where can I use my Companion Card in NSW?

At participating affiliates, your companion often gets a second ticket at no charge (or a set discount). Always confirm with the venue before you travel, because offers can change.

What the Companion Card is for

The Companion Card is issued to a person with disability, not to the support person. When you book or buy your own ticket at a participating business, your companion can receive a matching concession so you are not paying twice for access. On many public transport networks the companion travels free when supporting the cardholder.

How validity checks usually work

Programs look for a significant and permanent disability, a need for attendant care to take part in community life, and an expectation that the need is lifelong. Temporary injuries, short recovery periods, or being able to attend most outings alone will usually point away from a card. Each state or territory applies the national principles with its own forms and evidence rules.

Companion Card and the NDIS

NDIS funding and the Companion Card answer different questions. Being a participant does not automatically mean you will receive a Companion Card, and having a card does not replace NDIS supports. Many people use both: NDIS for funded supports in a plan, and the Companion Card for fair pricing when a companion is required at venues or on transport.

Checking venues before you go

Affiliates can join or leave the scheme, and ticket rules can vary by session or fare type. The safest approach is to check the official state directory, look for Companion Card signage, or call the venue. The examples on this page are typical NSW categories, not a guarantee for a specific date or event.

How Carevo can help next

Carevo is a connection platform: we help participants and families find vetted NDIS and care providers. We do not issue Companion Cards or decide card validity. If you are navigating disability supports, plan reviews, or community access, our team can point you toward providers and resources that fit your situation.

What is a Companion Card NSW?

A Companion Card is a free card for people with significant, permanent disability who need attendant care support to participate in community activities.

How it works:

  • You buy a ticket for yourself at participating venues
  • Your companion (carer) gets free or discounted entry
  • On public transport, your companion travels free

The card is valid for 5 years and is recognized across all Australian states and territories.

How do I check if my Companion Card is still valid?

To check current validity before an outing:

  1. Check the expiry date on the card
  2. Confirm the cardholder will be present
  3. Check the venue is a participating affiliate
  4. Confirm the booking is for one companion concession unless venue terms differ

If the card is expired or details are unclear, contact your state Companion Card office before attending.

What is the difference between a Companion Card and a Carer Card NSW?

These are two different cards serving different purposes:

Companion Card Carer Card
For who? Person with disability The carer (person providing care)
Benefits Carer gets free entry to venues Concessions on utilities, rates, services
Cost Free Free (if receiving Carer Payment)

You may be eligible for both cards - they serve complementary purposes.

Why might a valid Companion Card still be declined?

Even with a current card, concessions can be declined when:

  • The venue is not a participating affiliate
  • The cardholder is not present
  • The request is for more than one companion concession
  • The ticket type has specific conditions and staff cannot verify eligibility at entry

Checking affiliate directories and venue terms before travel reduces last-minute issues.
