Where can I find gardening services for pensioners near me?

The ranked list above shows garden maintenance providers currently covering Australian Capital Territory, including gardeners who invoice under NDIS, Support at Home, CHSP or DVA funding as well as house gardening services you can pay for privately. If you are searching for gardeners for elderly parents, settle the funding question first: a subsidised place arranged through My Aged Care usually brings the cost of the same fortnightly mowing visit well below a private gardener’s full rate (My Aged Care, 2026).

How do pensioners get subsidised gardening and lawn mowing?

Most searches for cheap or free gardening for pensioners are really a question about which door to knock on, so here they are in order of how much they reduce the cost.

  1. Commonwealth Home Support Programme. The lowest ongoing cost for most older Australians. Government funding covers most of the fee and you pay a contribution set by the provider’s contribution policy; a provider cannot refuse service to someone who genuinely cannot pay (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). Register with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, be assessed, and choose a CHSP garden maintenance provider; the CHSP provider directory lists them by suburb.
  2. Support at Home. If you already hold a classification or a transitioned Home Care Package, your provider can schedule garden maintenance under your quarterly budget now. Annual budgets run from $11,031.56 to $80,294, and everyday living services such as gardening carry a contribution that depends on your pension status.
  3. Veterans’ Home Care. Gold and White Card holders can have safety-related garden maintenance funded by DVA, up to 15 hours in a 12-month period subject to assessed need, with a small co-payment. Call the assessment agency on 1300 550 450.
  4. NDIS Household Tasks. For participants under 65, yard maintenance is funded from the Core budget where the participant cannot do the work because of their disability and the task keeps the home safe.
  5. Council and community programs. Some councils run low-cost mowing or maintenance for pensioners and some community organisations run volunteer schemes; availability is local and changes, so ask your council directly.
  6. Pensioner discounts. Commercial gardeners sometimes offer one at their own discretion. No paperwork and available now, but usually modest, and it is the fallback while a funded place is arranged.

What counts as light gardening under NDIS or Support at Home?

Light gardening is routine outdoor maintenance such as lawn mowing, weeding, pruning of small shrubs, and leaf clearing, not heavy landscaping or tree removal. Under the NDIS, yard maintenance is only funded where it is an essential task a participant cannot do because of their disability and it meets the reasonable and necessary criteria (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27), so it is not a generally available service. On the aged care side it can be funded through Support at Home or the CHSP for eligible clients.

The line between light gardening and landscaping matters because it decides what is funded. Keeping paths clear, edges trimmed and a yard tidy is treated as maintenance that supports safe access. Building new garden beds, removing trees, or reshaping a yard is landscaping and sits outside these programs.

Who it is for and how it is funded

Eligible groups are NDIS participants for whom yard work is an essential, disability-related task, and older Australians accessing Support at Home or the CHSP for basic home maintenance (Department of Health and Aged Care 2025). Veterans may also access safety-related garden maintenance through DVA Veterans’ Home Care, capped at up to 15 hours in a 12-month period subject to assessed need; see DVA-funded home care. Funding is not automatic in any stream; it depends on assessed need and plan or program rules.

For a household in Australian Capital Territory, the safety angle is often what makes the case. Overgrown paths, slippery leaf litter and blocked access raise the risk of a fall, and a maintained yard removes those hazards. What the work costs out of pocket in Australian Capital Territory depends on which program funds it and how much of the fee is subsidised.

How to choose a gardener from the list above

The list above is ranked using the criteria explained in the methodology above it. When comparing gardeners in Australian Capital Territory, check three things: that they hold current public liability insurance, that they are registered or willing to invoice under the program funding you (NDIS, Support at Home, CHSP or DVA), and that the visit frequency suits the season, since lawns need more attention in the growing months. A regular weekly or fortnightly slot keeps hazards down better than one-off visits. Funded clients should add a fourth check: how the provider bills travel. NDIS providers can claim a separately agreed travel charge in vehicle running costs for travel to your home, so a genuinely local gardener leaves more of the budget for actual garden work.

How much does garden maintenance cost?

What you pay depends on the funding stream more than the mowing itself. Under CHSP, you pay a contribution set by the provider’s contribution policy, and providers cannot refuse service to someone who genuinely cannot pay (Department of Health and Aged Care 2025). Under Support at Home, garden maintenance draws on your quarterly budget; annual classifications range from $11,031.56 to $80,294, and because government price caps were deferred in May 2026, hourly rates still vary between registered providers, so compare quotes on the same basis. NDIS yard maintenance is billed within the price limits in the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27. Paying privately, expect quotes by the hour or by the job; green waste removal is the common hidden extra, so ask whether it is included.

Are there cheap lawn mowing services for pensioners?

Two different things answer that search. The first is a commercial gardener’s pensioner discount, offered at the business’s discretion: no paperwork, available now, but usually modest. The second is a subsidised service through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, where government funding covers most of the cost and you pay a contribution. That route needs registration with My Aged Care and an assessment, and there can be a wait, but the ongoing cost is usually the lowest available (My Aged Care, 2026); start at the Commonwealth Home Support Programme page. If you already hold a Support at Home budget or a transitioned Home Care Package, your provider can schedule mowing under it now; see the Support at Home program.

Does the NDIS fund yard maintenance?

Yes, under Household Tasks in the Core budget, where the participant cannot do the work because of their disability and the task keeps the home safe and habitable (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). That covers mowing, weeding, pruning small shrubs and clearing paths. It does not cover landscaping, garden redesign or planting for appearance, which fall outside the reasonable and necessary criteria. Yard maintenance often sits alongside indoor help under the same category, so if you need both, compare domestic assistance providers that offer garden add-ons.

How often should garden visits be scheduled?

Seasonally. In the growing months most lawns need mowing every one to two weeks; through winter, monthly is often enough. Autumn leaf-fall is the riskiest period for slips on paths, and a pre-summer tidy keeps yard edges clear before the hottest weeks. A fortnightly booking adjusted by season keeps costs even across the year and means the same gardener sees the property regularly; an untouched lawn at a booked visit can be an early sign an older person is struggling indoors too. Gutter cleaning and small repairs sit outside light gardening; see minor home repairs for that work.

Get matched with gardening services

What subsidised gardening covers, and what it will not

The single most common disappointment is expecting a garden service and receiving a safety service. The funding rules are narrower than the phrase “gardening” suggests.

Generally covered. Work that keeps the property safe and accessible: mowing where overgrowth is a hazard or a fire risk, clearing paths and entryways, trimming vegetation blocking access or windows, removing trip hazards, and clearing gutters where safe to do so.

Generally not covered. Aesthetic gardening. Planting, landscaping, garden design, weeding flower beds, pruning for appearance, lawn fertilising, and maintaining a garden purely because it is enjoyed rather than because it is unsafe.

The reason is that CHSP and Support at Home fund home maintenance to keep a person living safely at home, not to maintain a property to a standard. Assessors apply that test literally, and a request framed as “the garden is getting away from me” is weaker than “I cannot get to the clothesline safely”.

Height and equipment limits apply too. Many providers will not send a worker up a ladder, so gutter clearing may need a specialist contractor even where the funding allows it.

Who pays for gardening, by pathway

Commonwealth Home Support Programme. Entry-level home maintenance after a My Aged Care assessment, with a small client contribution set by the provider. This is the most common route and the cheapest.

Support at Home. Home maintenance drawn from the quarterly budget. Price caps were deferred in May 2026, so providers set their own rates and written price lists are worth comparing (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2026).

Veterans’ Home Care. Gold and White Card holders can have safety-related home and garden maintenance funded by DVA, generally up to 15 hours in a 12-month period subject to assessed need, arranged through the VHC Assessment Agency on 1300 550 450 rather than My Aged Care.

NDIS. Yard maintenance is funded only where it is disability-related and reasonable and necessary, which is a narrow test. It is not a general entitlement for participants.

State and council schemes. Many councils run subsidised garden and handyman services for pensioners independently of federal funding. These are not listed nationally, so call your council directly.

How this page is compiled

The provider rankings and figures on this page come from Carevo platform records, including provider registrations, measured response times and coverage, together with the cited official sources. Carevo is an Australian platform that connects families with NDIS and aged care providers. Carevo does not deliver care itself.

Funding sources and checks

Check the current NDIA pricing arrangements and Support at Home program rules for the proposed service. Funding depends on the approved support and available budget; a Carevo listing is not approval. Confirm availability and a start date directly with the provider.

How we rank providers

Rankings in Australian Capital Territory use directory relevance and observable activity on Carevo: service match, distance, register-sourced status fields, whether an enquiry can reach the provider, and recent response and connection activity. Rankings are recalculated daily. They do not assess care quality or recommend a provider.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Household tasks, or offer gardening. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Activity on Carevo. We measure recent actions such as connecting on an enquiry, opening its contact details, responding, and an inquirer reporting whether a connection helped. These are platform activity signals, not an assessment of the support delivered.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Register-sourced status. NDIS registration fields come from the NDIS Commission provider register. Aged care approval fields come from the My Aged Care register. These statuses are ranking inputs, not Carevo endorsements, and you should confirm the current register entry before choosing a provider.
  • Carevo enquiries. Providers who have paused requests from us are moved down among providers with the same relevance. They stay visible and are marked as not receiving Carevo enquiries.
  • Recent activity. Providers active on Carevo recently (a connection, a login, or a profile update) get a small boost, the same signal shown as "Active this week" on their card. It is deliberately small: stronger relevance and condition evidence outweigh a recent login.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australian Capital Territory rank above those covering only the broader region.

What the enquiries status means

It answers one question: would a request sent through Carevo today actually reach them? It is not a rating, it is not about the provider's books, and it is not a statement about their capacity, their waiting list, or the quality of their care.

Receiving
At least one contact on their account is set up to receive new requests from us, and someone has signed in recently enough for us to say a person is there.
Not receiving
Every contact on the account has unsubscribed or paused, so we have no way to pass an enquiry on.
No status shown
We cannot tell either way, so we say nothing rather than label the provider. The account is set to receive enquiries, but nobody has signed in recently, or there are no contact details on file. It is not a negative mark, and most listings sit here.

A provider who is not receiving our enquiries may well be taking new clients directly. Providers set this themselves and can turn it back on at any time from their Carevo account or from any email we send them. Providers not receiving our enquiries are moved down the list and never hidden. It is refreshed daily, so a provider who resumes, or signs in, reappears within a day.

What the Carevo activity rating means

The Strong activity rating describes how a provider behaves on Carevo, not the care they deliver.

Where it starts
Every provider starts at a baseline of 50.
What moves it
Enquiries from the last 90 days. The strongest positive is a care seeker naming that provider as the one who helped them. The clearest negative is connecting on an enquiry and never opening the contact details.
How it is kept honest
Recalculated daily from scratch, shown only above the baseline and only with at least two scored signals, and removed automatically when either stops being true. It cannot be purchased.

It is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or an assessment of care quality, and we do not screen providers for complaints. Complaints are handled by the NDIS Commission and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. See the full activity rating methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gardening services providers are there in Australian Capital Territory?

There are 90 gardening services providers with active listings in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) on Carevo. Providers are ordered using service match, location, register-sourced status and observable activity on Carevo. No provider can pay for a higher position, a badge or an activity rating.

How quickly can I start with a provider in Australian Capital Territory?
