How we rank providers

Rankings in Australia are based on real outcomes between providers and families on our platform. They are recalculated daily and cannot be purchased or influenced by advertising.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here are registered with the NDIS for Therapeutic Supports and Community nursing care for high needs, or offer nutrition, nursing, and allied health. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Outcomes with families. We measure what happens after a family contacts a provider. Providers where families report positive outcomes rank higher. Multiple signals are weighted across a rolling window.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Registration and compliance. NDIS registered and government-approved aged care providers are weighted for meeting quality and safeguards standards.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australia rank above those covering only the broader region.

What "Trusted" means. The Trusted badge is awarded to providers with a consistent record of positive outcomes with families on our platform. It is based on multiple behavioural signals and family feedback, and it cannot be purchased.

How much does nutritional support cost in Australia?

Nutritional Support in Australia typically costs Prescribed supplementary dietary products fully funded under the Support at Home Clinical Supports category (equipment may be means tested). Actual rates vary by provider, funding type, and the level of support required.

How to pay for nutritional support

Funding options include Support at Home. Eligibility depends on your assessment and plan.

Getting the Right Nutrition When Your Health Depends on It

Eating well sounds simple enough until a medical condition makes it complicated. Maybe swallowing has become difficult after a stroke. Maybe a chronic illness means ordinary food no longer provides what your body needs. Or maybe your GP has told you that you need specialised nutritional products but you have no idea where to start.

Prescribed dietary products are not the same as picking up a protein shake from the supermarket. These are medical-grade nutritional products ordered by a doctor or dietitian to manage specific health conditions. They include enteral nutrition (tube feeding formulas), thickened fluids for people with swallowing difficulties, oral nutritional supplements for malnutrition, and specialised products for conditions like kidney disease or diabetes.

The good news is that under the Support at Home program, prescribed supplementary dietary products sit in the Clinical Supports category, so the products carry no participant contribution when prescribed for eligible older Australians. Carevo connects you with providers in Australia who can help you access these products and the clinical support that goes with them.

What Prescribed Dietary Products Cover

Enteral Nutrition

For people who cannot take enough nutrition by mouth, enteral feeding delivers liquid nutrition directly to the stomach or small intestine through a tube. This includes nasogastric tubes, PEG tubes, and jejunostomy tubes. The formulas used are carefully selected based on your medical condition, caloric needs, and any allergies or intolerances.

Providers connected through Carevo can supply enteral nutrition products. The prescribed supplementary dietary products themselves sit under the Clinical Supports category with no participant contribution. The associated equipment, including feeding pumps, giving sets, and syringes, is funded separately through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme, where items fall under the Independence category and may be means tested, with participant contributions ranging from about 5 per cent for full pensioners up to 50 per cent for self-funded retirees. Community nurses can also assist with tube management and feeding schedules at home.

Thickened Fluids and Texture-Modified Products

Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, affects a significant number of older Australians. Swallowing thin liquids like water, tea, or juice can cause choking or aspiration, where fluid enters the lungs instead of the stomach. This increases the risk of pneumonia and other serious complications.

Speech pathologists assess swallowing function and recommend the appropriate fluid thickness level. Providers can then supply pre-thickened drinks or thickening agents that you add to regular fluids at home. These products are available in different consistency levels to match your specific needs. Funding through the Clinical Supports category applies where the products qualify as prescribed supplementary dietary products for a need related to age-related functional decline or impairment.

Oral Nutritional Supplements

When you can still eat and drink but are not getting enough nutrition from regular meals, oral nutritional supplements fill the gap. These come as ready-to-drink liquids, powders, or puddings and provide concentrated calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Your GP or dietitian may prescribe these if you are losing weight unintentionally, recovering from illness, or finding it harder to eat enough as you age.

Specialised Products for Medical Conditions

Kidney disease, liver disease, certain cancers, and metabolic disorders all have dietary products designed to work within the restrictions of the condition. These are always prescribed and monitored by your medical team.

Nutritional support and dietary products for aged care in Australia

Who Qualifies for Funded Nutritional Support

Under the Support at Home Clinical Supports category, prescribed supplementary dietary products are covered at no cost to you when:

  • An Accredited Practising Dietitian or an AHPRA-registered health practitioner working within their scope of practice has prescribed the products.
  • The products are needed for a need related to age-related functional decline or impairment.
  • You have been assessed and approved for Support at Home services through My Aged Care.
  • The products are clinically necessary rather than a lifestyle or preference choice. Meal replacements for weight loss are not covered.

The Support at Home program recognises that prescribed nutrition is a clinical need, not an optional extra. Support at Home replaced the Home Care Packages Program on 1 November 2025, and existing package recipients were transitioned across to Support at Home with their ongoing funding. If you receive services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), you may also access nutritional products through your existing funding.

How Prescriptions Work

Getting access to prescribed dietary products follows a straightforward process.

  1. Clinical Assessment: Your GP, specialist, or an Accredited Practising Dietitian assesses your nutritional status and identifies the need for prescribed products. For swallowing difficulties, a speech pathologist will also be involved.

  2. Prescription: Your clinician writes a prescription or clinical recommendation specifying the products, quantities, and duration. This documentation is needed for funding approval.

  3. Provider Setup: Your aged care provider arranges the supply of products. Some providers manage this directly; others work with pharmacy or nutrition supply companies. Carevo can connect you with providers in Australia who handle this process.

  4. Ongoing Monitoring: Your nutritional needs are reviewed regularly. A dietitian checks whether the products are working, whether quantities need adjusting, and whether your condition has changed in ways that affect your nutrition plan.

The Role of Dietitians in Your Care

Prescribed dietary products work best when they are part of a broader nutrition plan managed by a qualified dietitian. An Accredited Practising Dietitian can:

  • Assess your nutritional status using clinical tools and blood tests.
  • Identify the right products for your specific condition and preferences.
  • Create a meal plan that integrates prescribed products with regular food where possible.
  • Monitor your weight and nutritional markers over time, adjusting your plan as needed.
  • Educate you and your family on preparation, storage, and administration of products.

Carevo connects you with dietitians in Australia who provide home visits. A dietitian in your home can see your kitchen setup, understand your routine, and give practical advice that actually works in your situation.

  4. Connect with a Provider to discuss your specific needs, funding options, and how they can help set up your nutritional care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are prescribed dietary products really free under Support at Home? When prescribed by an Accredited Practising Dietitian or an AHPRA-registered practitioner for a need related to age-related functional decline or impairment, prescribed supplementary dietary products sit in the Clinical Supports category and carry no participant contribution, so you pay nothing out of pocket for the products themselves. Related equipment, such as feeding pumps, giving sets, and syringes, is funded through the separate AT-HM scheme and may be means tested.

What if I am not yet on Support at Home? If you receive services through CHSP, you may be able to access nutritional products through your existing funding. For private options, contact providers through Carevo for pricing. If you are not yet in the aged care system, call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to start an assessment.

Can I choose which products I use? Your prescribing clinician will recommend specific products based on your medical needs, but there is often some flexibility in flavours and formats. Your dietitian can work with you to find options you are more likely to enjoy and stick with.

How are the products delivered? This varies by provider. Some deliver directly to your home in Australia. Others arrange regular supply through a pharmacy or specialist nutrition company. Your provider will set up a delivery schedule that keeps you stocked without waste.
