Which funding stream pays for dietetics, and who qualifies?

If weight loss or appetite change is the reason you are looking, say so when you make contact, because it changes which dietitian is the right fit.

A home visit typically covers a nutrition screen, a review of what is actually being eaten rather than what is being bought, texture modification where swallowing is affected, and supplements only where food first approaches are not enough. Support at Home and Home Care Packages both fund allied health including dietetics, and the NDIS funds it where the need relates to disability.

How does the NDIS fund a dietitian?

What is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, and why does it matter?

“Dietitian” and “nutritionist” are not AHPRA-protected titles in Australia, so anyone can use them. The credential that carries weight is Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), awarded by Dietitians Australia, which requires an accredited degree and ongoing continuing professional development.

This is not a technicality. The NDIS, Support at Home and Medicare all fund APDs specifically. A practitioner without APD status may be perfectly competent, but their invoices generally cannot be claimed against any of those three funding streams, which means you pay privately.

Ask for the APD number and check it on the Dietitians Australia register before the first appointment, in the same way you would check an AHPRA registration for a physiotherapist.

Dietitians for older Australians

People 65 and over generally cannot use NDIS Capacity Building. Dietetics is available to them as a clinical support under Support at Home, which carries no participant contribution once it is approved in a care plan after assessment through the Single Assessment System (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

Medicare is the other route. A GP Chronic Condition Management plan covers up to five rebated allied health visits a year across all disciplines combined, so dietetics competes with physiotherapy and podiatry for the same five sessions.
