NDIS-funded sessions are capped at 178.99 an hour, with provider travel billable at an agreed travel charge where your service agreement allows it. Under Support at Home, dietetics is a clinical support and fully government funded once you are assessed, with no participant contribution (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025). A Medicare GP Chronic Condition Management Plan rebates part of up to five allied health visits a year, shared across every discipline on the plan, and most practices charge a gap. Private fees are set by each practice, so ask for the home-visit rate, including travel, in writing before the first appointment.

Which funding stream pays for dietetics, and who qualifies?

NDIS participants access dietetics through the Capacity Building - Improved Health and Wellbeing budget, under registration group 0128 (Therapeutic Supports), where nutrition management is reasonably and necessarily related to the participant’s disability (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27). Dietitians working with older adults deal with a different problem set to weight management: unintentional weight loss, poor appetite, swallowing difficulty, and nutrition risk after a hospital stay. If weight loss or appetite change is the reason you are looking, say so when you make contact, because it changes which dietitian is the right fit.

A home visit typically covers a nutrition screen, a review of what is actually being eaten rather than what is being bought, texture modification where swallowing is affected, and supplements only where food first approaches are not enough. Support at Home and Home Care Packages both fund allied health including dietetics, and the NDIS funds it where the need relates to disability.

How does the NDIS fund a dietitian?

Dietetics sits in Capacity Building under Improved Health and Wellbeing, not Core Supports, and that placement decides what it can be used for.

The hourly cap is $178.99 in 2026-27 (NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27), with travel for home visits billed separately at 50 per cent of the service rate. Plan management type decides who you can see. NDIA-managed participants need an NDIS-registered provider; plan-managed and self-managed participants can use any Accredited Practising Dietitian.

What is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, and why does it matter?

“Dietitian” and “nutritionist” are not AHPRA-protected titles in Australia, so anyone can use them. The credential that carries weight is Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), awarded by Dietitians Australia, which requires an accredited degree and ongoing continuing professional development.

This is not a technicality. The NDIS, Support at Home and Medicare all fund APDs specifically. A practitioner without APD status may be perfectly competent, but their invoices generally cannot be claimed against any of those three funding streams, which means you pay privately.

Ask for the APD number and check it on the Dietitians Australia register before the first appointment, in the same way you would check an AHPRA registration for a physiotherapist.

Dietitians for older Australians

People 65 and over generally cannot use NDIS Capacity Building. Dietetics is available to them as a clinical support under Support at Home, which carries no participant contribution once it is approved in a care plan after assessment through the Single Assessment System (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2025).

Medicare is the other route. A GP Chronic Condition Management plan covers up to five rebated allied health visits a year across all disciplines combined, so dietetics competes with physiotherapy and podiatry for the same five sessions. For someone with several needs, that allocation runs out quickly and is worth planning deliberately rather than using first-come-first-served.
