What does an NDIS registered speech pathologist mean?

Registration is held by the provider organisation, not by the individual clinician. A speech pathology practice registers with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission under the Therapeutic Supports registration group, is audited against the NDIS Practice Standards, and appears on the NDIS Provider Finder; a sole trader can register the same way. Registration is only required when the participant’s plan is NDIA-managed. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered speech pathologists, and many excellent clinicians are unregistered because the audit cost is high for a small practice. The professional check is separate and applies to both: Speech Pathology Australia certified practising membership confirms the clinician’s qualification and continuing education, since speech pathology is self-regulated and has no AHPRA register. No, and this surprises people. Speech pathology is self-regulated in Australia: it is not one of the professions registered under AHPRA.

The credential that matters is Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) membership of Speech Pathology Australia, which requires an accredited qualification and ongoing professional development. Medicare, the NDIS and Support at Home all fund speech pathologists holding it.

So the check is different from the one you would run on a physiotherapist. Ask for the CPSP number and confirm it with Speech Pathology Australia rather than looking for an AHPRA registration that will not exist. Waiting lists, and what to do about them

Speech pathology has among the longest waits in allied health, particularly for paediatric assessment, and the wait is where most families lose momentum.

Three things shorten it in practice. Ask to go on a cancellation list, not just the standing waitlist. Ask whether telehealth is available for the assessment, because it is clinically appropriate for many communication presentations and often has far shorter queues than face-to-face.
