Why family carers burn out

Family caring rarely arrives all at once. It grows from occasional help into supervision, then personal care, then broken nights, without a point where anyone formally asks whether the load is sustainable. Carers also tend to measure everything by the needs of the person they care for, so their own warning signs, exhaustion, irritability, skipped GP appointments, get explained away. A structured self-check makes the load visible before it becomes a crisis for two people instead of one.

What this quiz is measuring

The score reflects six practical indicators that commonly track carer strain: weekly caring hours, interrupted nights, living with the person you care for, overwhelm frequency, neglect of your own health, and whether anyone can take over. These are not diagnostic criteria, but reviewed together they give an honest picture of how much reserve you have left.

What to do with an elevated result

Start with respite. Planned respite care can be funded through Support at Home for older people, through NDIS Core Supports for participants, or booked privately, and overnight care can hand back the nights that broken sleep is taking. Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 for free counselling, peer support and emergency respite. Then book the GP appointment you have been putting off, for yourself.

Financial support while you care

If caring limits your ability to work, Centrelink's Carer Payment and Carer Allowance may apply. The carer payment calculator gives an estimate of what you may be eligible for, and caring hours evidence from a quiz like this one is worth raising with your GP when completing carer assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this caregiver burnout quiz a medical diagnosis?

No. This quiz is a self-check for caring load and wellbeing risk indicators. It does not diagnose a mental health condition. If your stress is severe or persistent, speak with your GP or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

How is the caregiver burnout score calculated?

The score is based on weekly caring hours, interrupted nights, whether you live with the person you care for, how often you feel overwhelmed, whether your own health appointments are being skipped, and whether anyone can take over from you. Each area contributes weighted points to a total score out of 100.

What score range is low, medium, or high risk?

This quiz classifies results as low risk from 0 to 30, medium risk from 31 to 60, and high risk from 61 to 100.

What support exists for family carers in Australia?

Carer Gateway (1800 422 737) is the Australian Government's free service for carers, offering counselling, peer support and emergency respite. Planned respite care can be funded through Support at Home, the NDIS, or booked privately. Centrelink's Carer Payment and Carer Allowance provide income support for eligible carers.

What should I do if I get a high risk score?

Arrange a break first: respite care exists exactly for this situation, from a few hours a week to overnight or multi-day stays. Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737, see your GP about your own health, and if anything feels unsafe call 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
