Estimate Supported Independent Living (SIL) annual and weekly costs from your support ratio, intensity, daytime active hours, and overnight type. Figures use 2025-26 NDIS price limits as a planning guide. Your provider's SIL quote and the NDIA determine approved funding.

SIL vs rent and living costs
SIL pays for support workers in shared living, not the building.
Rent and day-to-day living are usually paid from your income (e.g. DSP), not from SIL line items.
This tool does not include rent, groceries, or utilities.
Disclaimer: Estimates only. Approved SIL funding comes from a formal provider quote and NDIA decision. Provider charges and rosters vary.

Supported Independent Living in plain English
SIL is NDIS funding for the people who support you in shared accommodation, help with daily living, personal care, and supervision as set out in your roster of care. It does not pay for the rent or purchase of the home itself, which is funded separately.
Funding levels depend on how much support you need across the week, including overnights. Higher ratios of staff to participants (for example 1:1) and active night shifts usually cost more than shared 1:3 supports with a sleepover model.
How this calculator models your week
The tool uses a simplified week: weekday hours at the weekday limit, Saturday at evening/Saturday rates, Sunday at Sunday rates, and your chosen overnight option applied across seven nights, with hours and nightly costs divided by your support ratio (your share of the worker's time).
Real rosters include public holidays, leave, different shift patterns, and mixed ratios, so treat the output as a ballpark for conversations with a SIL provider, not a plan budget line copied from the NDIA.
Quotes, plans, and the NDIA
Before SIL appears in your plan, a registered provider typically completes an assessment and submits a SIL quote. The NDIA decides what is reasonable and necessary against your goals and evidence. That process can take months and may differ from any online estimate.
Your support coordinator or LAC can help you compare houses, providers, and roster options while funding is being determined.
Rent, living costs, and what SIL does not cover
Participants usually pay reasonable rent contribution and ordinary living costs (food, utilities, personal items) from their own income, such as DSP. SIL line items are for support delivery, not those household bills. Always read your service agreement and occupancy terms carefully.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much NDIS SIL funding will I get?
NDIS SIL funding varies significantly based on your individual support needs:
- Lower needs (1:3 ratio, sleepover): ~$150,000 - $200,000/year
- Medium needs (1:2 ratio, sleepover): ~$200,000 - $300,000/year
- Higher needs (1:1 ratio, active night): ~$350,000 - $450,000+/year
The NDIA determines your funding based on a SIL quote submitted by your provider, which details your specific support roster and needs.
What is the cost of supported living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) costs depend on several factors:
- Support ratio: 1:1 (most expensive) vs shared 1:2 or 1:3
- Overnight support: Active night (~$680/night) vs sleepover (~$283/night)
- Support intensity: Standard vs high-intensity rates
- Hours of support: 24/7 vs daytime only
SIL funding covers support workers only. You'll pay rent and living expenses separately from your personal income (typically DSP).
What are the NDIS SIL rates for 2025?
The 2025-26 NDIS SIL price limits are:
| Support Type | Standard | High Intensity |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday (6am-8pm) | $70.88/hr | $78.80/hr |
| Evening/Saturday | $78.23/hr | $86.37/hr |

| Sleepover | $282.78/night | |
| Active Night | $85.22/hr | $94.47/hr |
How do I apply for SIL funding?
The SIL application process:
- Discuss with your Support Coordinator or LAC - they'll help determine if SIL is right for you
- Choose a SIL provider - research providers and visit potential houses
- Provider assessment - they'll assess your support needs
- SIL quote submission - the provider creates a detailed roster and submits to NDIA
- NDIA review - may take several weeks to months
- Funding added to plan - once approved, SIL is added to your NDIS plan
The whole process can take 3-6+ months, so start early.
What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL funds the support workers who help you with daily living. The dwelling itself is funded separately. The two are different line items, and you can have one, the other, or both. For housing funding, use the dedicated accommodation funding tool.
