How we rank providers

Rankings in Australia are based on real outcomes between providers and families on our platform. They are recalculated daily and cannot be purchased or influenced by advertising.

  • How this list is built. Providers shown here offer related disability and aged care services, allied health, and therapy. Generalist providers who only mention this service in passing are excluded, so the list reflects genuine, demonstrated capability.
  • Outcomes with families. We measure what happens after a family contacts a provider. Providers where families report positive outcomes rank higher. Multiple signals are weighted across a rolling window.
  • Service match. Providers are ranked by how closely their registered services and capabilities match what you are searching for.
  • Registration and compliance. NDIS registered and government-approved aged care providers are weighted for meeting quality and safeguards standards.
  • Local presence. Providers confirmed in Australia rank above those covering only the broader region.

What "Trusted" means. The Trusted badge is awarded to providers with a consistent record of positive outcomes with families on our platform. It is based on multiple behavioural signals and family feedback, and it cannot be purchased.

How much does computer and switch access cost in Australia?

Computer And Switch Access in Australia typically costs $200-$20,000+ (depending on system complexity). Actual rates vary by provider, funding type, and the level of support required.

How to pay for computer and switch access

Funding options include NDIS Assistive Technology. Eligibility depends on your assessment and plan.

Access Computers, Tablets, and Devices When Standard Controls Do Not Work

For people who cannot use a standard keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen, accessing a computer, tablet, or phone requires alternative input methods. Switch access, eye gaze tracking, head tracking, voice control, and adapted keyboards and mice open up digital access for people with physical disabilities that prevent standard interaction.

This is not about plugging in a different mouse. Computer access solutions require assessment by a therapist who understands the person’s motor abilities, the available access methods, and how to configure software and hardware to work together. The wrong setup leads to frustration and abandonment. The right setup opens up communication, education, employment, entertainment, and social connection.

Through Carevo, you can connect with computer and switch access providers in Australia who assess, prescribe, set up, and train people to use alternative computer access systems.

Who Needs Computer Access Assessment

  • People with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury, or motor neurone disease who cannot use standard input devices.
  • People with acquired brain injury or stroke who have lost fine motor control.
  • Children with physical disabilities who need access to computers for education.
  • People who use communication devices (AAC) and need their access method integrated across devices.
  • People whose physical abilities are changing and who need their access method reviewed and updated.

Types of Computer and Switch Access

Providers through Carevo assess, supply, and configure:

Switch Access Switches are simple input devices that can be activated by pressing, squeezing, blowing, sipping, or moving any body part with reliable voluntary movement. A single switch can control a computer through scanning: the cursor moves automatically through options on screen, and the person activates the switch to select. Two-switch and multi-switch setups increase speed and flexibility.

Eye Gaze Technology A camera-based system that tracks eye movement and allows the person to control a computer by looking at targets on screen. Eye gaze is the primary access method for people with very limited physical movement. Modern eye gaze systems are fast, accurate, and can be mounted on a wheelchair, desk, or bed frame.

Head Tracking A camera tracks a reflective dot or the person’s head movement to control the cursor on screen. Head tracking suits people who have reliable head control but limited hand function. It provides more direct cursor control than switch scanning.

Adapted Keyboards and Mice Larger keyboards with bigger keys, smaller keyboards for people with limited range of movement, keyguards that prevent accidental key presses, and trackball or joystick mice that replace the standard mouse. These are often the simplest and most cost-effective solutions for people with mild to moderate motor difficulties.

Voice Control Software that converts speech to text and allows voice commands to control the computer. Voice control is effective for people with good speech but limited hand function. Modern voice control systems are accurate and can operate across applications.

Mounting Systems Adjustable arms and mounts that position screens, switches, and devices in the optimal location for the person’s access method. Mounting is particularly important for wheelchair users, as the device needs to move with the chair and be positioned precisely for the person’s range of movement.

The Assessment and Setup Process

  1. Access assessment. An OT or speech pathologist with AT expertise assesses the person’s motor abilities, identifies the most reliable access site (hand, head, eye, foot, mouth), and evaluates cognitive and visual capacity for computer use.
  2. Equipment trial. The therapist trials different access methods with the person to determine which is most effective and sustainable. Trials may occur over multiple sessions.
  3. Equipment prescription. The therapist specifies the hardware (switches, eye gaze unit, adapted keyboard) and software (scanning software, on-screen keyboard, voice control) needed.
  4. Funding application. The AT assessment report and equipment specifications are submitted for NDIS or other funding approval.
  5. Setup and configuration. The provider installs hardware, configures software, and positions all components for optimal access.
  6. Training. The person receives training in using their access system. Carers and family members are trained in troubleshooting, positioning, and basic maintenance.
  7. Review and adjustment. The therapist reviews the setup after a trial period and adjusts settings, positioning, and software configuration as needed.

Funding Computer and Switch Access

  • NDIS Assistive Technology: Computer access equipment is funded under NDIS AT supports. Eye gaze systems, switch access setups, and adapted input devices are all NDIS-fundable with an appropriate AT assessment report.
  • NDIS Capacity Building: The assessment, training, and therapy sessions are funded under Improved Daily Living.
  • DVA: Eligible veterans can access computer assistive technology through DVA.
  • Education Departments: Students with disability may access computer access technology through school-funded assistive technology programs, in addition to NDIS funding.
  • Employment Programs: The Employment Assistance Fund (EAF), administered by JobAccess, may fund computer access and assistive technology for workplace use. Disability Employment Services providers can also help you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which access method is right? This is exactly what the assessment determines. The therapist evaluates every potential access site, looking for the movement that is most reliable, consistent, and sustainable. The “best” method depends entirely on the individual. Some people have reliable hand movement for a switch. Others have better head control. Some people’s most reliable movement is their eyes. The assessment identifies this systematically.

Is eye gaze technology accurate enough for everyday use? Modern eye gaze systems are highly accurate and fast enough for fluent communication and computer access. Calibration takes a few minutes and accuracy improves with use. Eye gaze technology has advanced significantly in recent years and is now the primary access method for many people with high-level physical disability.

Can switch access control a phone or tablet? Yes. Both iOS and Android have built-in switch access features. A Bluetooth switch can be paired with a phone or tablet to provide full device access through scanning. Your provider will configure the switch access settings on the person’s own devices.

What happens if the person’s abilities change? Computer access setups should be reviewed regularly, particularly for people with progressive conditions. If the person’s motor abilities change, the access method may need to be updated. A therapist can reassess and reconfigure the system to match the person’s current abilities.

Computer access is closely linked to communication devices and AAC, which often use the same access methods (switch, eye gaze, head tracking). You may also benefit from arm and hand function aids for physical device interaction, or specialist seating to optimise positioning for access. A comprehensive assistive technology assessment can address all your access and communication needs together.
