What this calculator is for
This page helps you turn hours and shift types into a rough gross income range. It is useful when you are comparing agency work with independent work, or when you want a ballpark before talking to an employer, accountant, or plan manager.
Employed (SCHADS) vs independent (NDIS caps)
Employed disability support workers are usually paid under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS). The tool uses rounded illustrative rates for weekdays and penalties, not your exact classification or grade.
Independent workers who invoice participants or plan managers are constrained by NDIS price limits for claimable supports. The calculator uses those caps so you can see the upper end of what might be charged for standard shift types, before business costs.
How shift mix and sleepovers change the total
Penalty shifts lift gross pay faster than adding the same hours on a weekday. If your percentages do not add to 100%, the tool still runs the maths but highlights the mismatch so you can fix your inputs.
Sleepovers use a flat NDIS line item style amount in the tool. If you are paid hourly for an active overnight, model those hours in the shift percentages instead.
NDIS price limits and what participants see
Price limits are maximums for supports delivered under NDIS rules, not a guarantee that every worker invoices at the cap. Participants and plan managers still review value and reasonableness. Carevo connects participants with providers; it does not set your pay as a worker.
Tax, super, and next steps
Gross income is not take-home pay. Employees have PAYG withholding and employer super; sole traders manage tax instalments, super, and insurance themselves. Use this estimate as a conversation starter with a registered tax agent or your payroll team.
Frequently asked questions
Hourly rates depend on employment type and shift:
- Employed (SCHADS): often roughly $29-$36/hour base, plus penalties for evenings and weekends depending on level and employer.
- Independent (NDIS caps): up to $70.88/hour weekday standard support in 2025-26, with higher caps on weekends and public holidays.
Independent gross can look higher, but tax, super, and insurance come out of your business income.
Full-time salaries in the sector are often discussed around roughly $55,000-$65,000 per year, but averages hide wide variation. Hours, penalties, regional demand, qualification level, and whether you work independently all move the number up or down.
Yes. Under the NDIS price guide for 2025-26, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday limits are higher than the standard weekday limit. Employed roles also use weekend penalties under the award. The calculator applies those ideas so you can see the effect of your shift mix.
Independents can charge up to the relevant NDIS price limit for the support and shift type. Standard weekday support is capped at $70.88/hour in 2025-26; Level 2 and high intensity supports have higher limits. Many workers charge below the cap depending on the agreement with the participant.
The limit is the maximum price that can be charged for a given support item under NDIS pricing. For standard weekday assistance with daily life in 2025-26, that cap is $70.88/hour, with higher limits for Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, and higher intensity supports. Limits change when the NDIS updates the price guide.
