What is crisis and complex needs support under the NDIS?
Crisis and complex needs support covers urgent, high-intensity assistance for participants whose support arrangements have broken down or are at immediate risk of breaking down, such as sudden loss of accommodation, hospitalisation of a primary carer, or escalating behavioural risk. The NDIS has no dedicated “crisis” funding category; instead, participants request a change of circumstances, and the NDIA prioritises plan reassessments for people in urgent situations (NDIS, 1800 800 110), with any funding increase decided through a plan variation that can take up to 28 days.
Who it is for and how it is funded
This support is for NDIS participants facing an emergency, a sudden change in circumstances, or needs too complex for their current supports to manage. It is funded through Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) for crisis hours, Capacity Building (Improved Daily Living) for skill development, and Specialist Support Coordination for complex case management. Short Term Respite, previously Short Term Accommodation, is respite-purposed (up to 28 days a year, 14 at a time) and is not a general emergency-housing fund.
Availability on Carevo
Carevo currently lists 28,004 NDIS providers across 4,782 suburbs, matched using the ranking criteria explained above. For complex support coordination, see Specialist Support Coordination.
